WASH.• JULY 'lI During the past week the local CMC tracks have hosted ' a Bicentennial Week celebration which has found the Pros riding for nearly $5000 during four races. Today's purse of $ 1776 lured riders from allover the Northwest to ride their best or as it sometimes happens, their worst. Sleepy-eyed stares were all too . co m mo n in the early morning hours as . many had 'also been at the Portland International Raceway race u nt il the witching hou rs on Saturday . Troy went by Ed to lead briefly before Ed res umed command. Mark Gregson {Kaw] worked th rough half the pack to move into second on the last lap . On the final tum Mark t ried to take ove r the lea d. In t he scuffle Mark we nt over the berm and was dr op ped to fo urth. Ro und tw o wa s led by J aco b son , Lee Voss (Hon) an d Gary Racca (DG) . Voss moved t o the fron t and stayed. Jacobson held second while Gregs on; Folck and Davis worked up fro m n inth, 10 th an d 11th to moved in behind him. When he dum ped it. they all we nt by. Gregs o n went down, also, in the last lap but was a ble to hold his position. In the 250 Pro class Vern Lamping (Kaw], Ke vin Myers (Bul) and Joe Sandgathe (Kaw) manage d to escape a m ulti-b ike p ile in the first tum to take the-lead. Gregson u ltimately moved out front once aga in. Craig Praus (Kaw) grabbed a permanent hold on sec ond while Barney Newman (H us) and Les Womack (Ya m) fo ught fo r t h ird most of the race, w ith Womack winning in the last lap. . TI,e second . 250 moto was berserko-eross . The entire center of the pack went d own on the first turn just to start t hings off. At least a t h ird of the riders were involved. Then two ride rs crashed on the downhill jump wi thin the first th ree laps to be out with assorted broken bones. Les Womack . (Ya m) escaped to the front with Rick Gage (Suz) and Mark Kaestner chasing hi m . Rick moved by Les to lead the rest of the way. Gregson came out of the. pile-up around 10th and moved through to push Kaestner by Womack in the lat e laps to come o ut on top of a t hree way tie for second place points which he shared with Womack a nd Praus. Ch uck Sun (Hus) led the Open Pros un til a goof dropped him to third behind Gregson and Womack. This looked like the three to beat until Womack's bike gave o ut o n the uphill. Matt J am es (Mai) inherited third until the nex t to last lap when his pipe parted co mpany an d he d ropped to fourth . By th e time he go t the checkered he was also holdin g his seat on by hand. Sun led round t wo all t he way . Montey Mitchell (KTM) yielded second' in the early lap s t o Newm an . Gregson was a spectator after the first coup le of • laps did his Kawasaki in .
