Edn a Mewton, Se cretary to Publ ish er Public Service Message Here at Fort Leonard Wood, MO ., interest has been developing in an All Army Motocross Championship. This would probably be conducted as inter-installation co mpe tit ion among U.S. Army soldiers st ationed in the States. Rather than send hundreds of letters to every Arm y activity, I feel that in terest ed personnel will respond to information printed in y o ur publication. It is importan t to have an estimate of participation prior to going an y further in the planning process. If y ou co uld see your wa y clear to print a sm all message urging soldiers to drop a lin e to me if they are interest ed in participating in an All Am y Motocross Championship, m yself, a nd hopefully many others, would be very app recia tive. Who knows, perhaps one da y the Army-Navy game ma y have a different flavor. JAMES STRICKLAND Cpr., In; Fort Leonard Wood, MO . Strickland, HQ Command, ' Bld g. 191 3, Fort Leonard Wood, MO. 65 4 73 . .. Ed. Once and for all I just read the article on the WE RA Ontario National Ro ad Race. That's a pretty glowing report for su ch a disorganized ex cuse for a ra ce . At least you should . have noticed that things were being poorly run; starting with Endicott's crash and progressing to the 350 GP race (three bikes originally entered) which was the highest paid event. It turns out that it didn't matter since nobody got paid and they weren't even sure who won all the mains let alone the heats. At 7:00 p.m. Sunday, Jammed by the Jammer amid a mass of confusion , it was an nou nced that there was no cash on hand and the results would have to be co m p iled later. DAVE HIGBEE Tucson, AZ. I would greatly appreciate a reaso for you r p u tting such an obnoxiou picture on yo ur co ver. I realize ho important it is to show us and appreciate it. But why a pi cture 0 Pierre pi cking his nose, me: wiih m hand in my cro tch , and Tony D. doin nothin g? I think Jody Weise l better get his ac together. Or is he trying to be an ass Iik Super Hunky? I thought the staff of Cycle News h more class than this, bu t now I wonder I hope you can m ake up for thi blunder in some way. A good role t o follow in this business is: wh en y ou 're not sure, edit, th en get on th e horn and be sur e. Here 's what we know for sure, so far, as related by race d irecto r Lan ce Weil. Th e results, in at least two classes, were m essed up because th ey had failed to properly mat ch up rid er numbers with nam es. Th e check book f ro m which pa yo ffs we re to be made was n ot available at the track (i t had been retained by Peter Frank in Philadelphia). Th erefore, Lan ce and Bob Crossman first had to st raigh ten out th e results (it took them a week ) th en co m m unicate th em to Philad elphia. A s th is is written, th e chec k s sh ould be in the mail ... Ed. We hit th e berm wrong and we w en d oum, Now we're an our f ee t awaiting sw if t kick. Ouch. OK , Jammer let's ge back on and gas it,. . . Ed. Stoked on box -stock Take it to the top I have just experienced something which has almost totally eluded me in four years of amateur and professional roadracing Really clos e roadra cing on equal motorcycles! This came about during the re cent Ouly 17 & 18) WERA National at Ontario Motor Speedway. It p resented me the opportunity to race a stock motorcycle against othe r stock motorcycles within a given displacement class. Box-stock ra cing could inject a fresh start to new racers and experienced riders alike. I whole-heartedly support the box-stock classes, and I would hope that lo cal sanctioning bodies (A FM, CMC , AMA, etc.) would realize that this class could bring a new era of rider-spectator interest. After reading your " Po lit ica Lifeline " article concerning the nois problem in the motorcycle industry , think it's time we put the b lame wher it belongs, the bureaucracy . Th manufacturers were required to mee the 86 dba law in order to be ab le t m ar ke t their m o to rcy cles and b accepted by the DMV / for OH licensing. However, the only m od el that qualify are the street models. Wha then about the "other" models tha ea ch and every manufacturer produces. The State of California requires eac and every motorcycle so ld in the stat to be issued either a street license or OHV license. Now they tum around an instruct their law enforcement offic to ticket when all they're doing is usin the bike under the conditions for whic it was built and for which they we licensed by the State themselves ~idiculous? You bet! Why doesn't the State of Califomi use some of the millions of dollars the are holding in limbo to purchase som areas where these "fugitive ,. famil me mbers and individuals can legall operate their bikes? Dirt bikes are big business i California and the State of Californi· had better get o ff their bureaucrati butts and try to fmd a viable solution t the noise problem instead of trying t pretend a problem doesn 't exist 0 trying to "le gisla te us out of busines altogether.
