• Sprockets TT By Cosmic Cat & CO. BAKERSFIELD. CAL.,JULY 3 Rider turnout was light at Sprockets Park tonight, but the track was in -th e best shape seen in quite awhile. . Most of the classes were combined but the spectators still witnessed a lot of close, down-to-the-wire racmg (among those watching from , the stands wai Bakersfield's asphalt hero, Ron Pierce, who started his career here at Sprockets). After th ree restarts, two Mains, and 20 minutes of arguing and protesting, the 500 Expert run was ove r, with two' different winners. The story went like this: With everyone on the line and ready to go, a couple of dudes with itchy clutches kept jumpi ng, but the starter never sent them back to th e penalty line . When we di d get a decent start, two went pown in tum one and restart nu mber three was in effect, T he starter was told that this would be the fmal star t , n o matter what h ap pens. So down come the flag, even though a f ew men had their hands up waiting for the rest to line up! It looked as though J ocy Brown (Yam) was the only one ready to race for he took an enormous holeshot and won the race, leading all the way. ' Frank Ad amo ' returned to the line and proceeded to give his views about the start and was soon joined by Paul Gates and the rest of the riders and even some spectators. After a long (and sometime vulgar) discussion, it was decided to run the race over (naughty, naughty] and give trophies to each race. Paul Gates won the second Main with Ken Parker second. Incidentally, Joey Brown and Adamo are both Class C Experts and were o nly riding as an exhibition. Ron Mendenhall [Honjju mped to an early 125cc Expert lead b ut was relieved of duty in the right-hander by Kirby Shropshire (Suz). Shropshire held his lead and went on to a commanding win with Mendenhall second and Brett Butterfield beating out Ron Bowman for third. Danny King (Yam) held the 200cc Expert point for four laps but lost it to a smooth going Steve Boswell (Yam ) in the first tum of the fmallap. • Results in Results Section.
