~F Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch this Su nday. About 80 m iles away the A.M.A. was ho lding a qu alifier on so m e less than wonderful little track, and Pro license holders were re quired to attend despite the fact that most of them would rather have been competing in their own state championship at the fine Lake Whitney facility . So, though there was plen t y of heated ac tion all t hrough the day and it turned o ut ' to be a day 'of fabulous racing and spectating, the absence of Texas' top line Pro riders was regrettable. Of course there were those who viewed the absence of their competitors as a chance to score a trip to McDonaids for a change . , The mo rn in g dawned with the sound of pit riders, (Whitney is pit racer's heaven!). Church service under the tower at 6:30 a.m. with little red Bibles being passed out, and Harvey Evans' familiar voice booming the start of practice over the P.A. system at 7:00 a.m, Pra ctice we nt well on a super loamy and' perfectly prepared track that was , if any t hing, too smooth . Dicky Turnbo later co m men ted that he had only ridden the very first part of practice when the track was still smooth and consequently was unprepared for the killer track that greeted him by the time his first moto rolled around. A t the riders' meeting it was announced that Mike DiCorte had pu rch ased Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch and that the Turnbo family would be moving up to the ranch to run it in conju nc tio n with Harvey Evans. We wish them luck. With practice over and the riders ' mee ting out o f the way, the second event , of the Texas Series got underway. In the 125 Expert class, with Danny Doss and Mel , Newman n o t in attendance, Dicky Turnbo won both motes, though not easily . In moto one it was Turnbo with the holeshot on his Yamaha, but Ru bin Alonz o from Dallas was hot on his tail and after four laps Rubin shot his Honda p ast Turnbo and started to pull away. Within two laps, however, Turnbo had reeled Alonzo back in and re passed for a lead which h e held to the flag . The second moto saw Turnbo get off the line in fourth place but he q uic kly m oved into the lead before the p ack came around at • the end of lap 'o ne. Shaun Kelley, astride a Honda, sh ad owed Turnbo for almost the entire moto but never seemed to be a threat to pass, finis hing in second. Steve Schramm was buzzing Shaun's rear fender in a close third place and that is how they fmished on the day. In what many knowledgeable onlookers described as his finest ride ever, Suzuki mounted David Fox fro m Dallas won th e first 250 Expert moto, came bac k with a sec ond in the last moto and captured first overall cash. As he came o ut of the hole in the lead, several rider-spectators who knew hi m said that he would never hold it, but to their amazement he not only held it, bu t did so under tremendous pressure from New Mexico native Gene Durham throughout the' entire moto. .Up and coming young Texan Ricky Reamer was third on a Pen ton. Keep an eye on this kid. He is going to be good. Reamer came back in the second moto to win with David Fox not too far behind. Mitch Milson was third and Durham, who was dead last at the end of lap one, blazed h is way to fourth by the , moto's end. Durham ended up third overall and Rea mer was second. The Open Expert class was strictly a duke-out between the flying' Ricky Reamer and Penton Central 's Ge ne Durham, both on big bore , orange tanked Pen to ns. A close race in the first moto saw Durham cross the line in first, but not by much . In the second m oto it was Reamer in the ' lead all the way. Darrell Hollingshead was in second and for the entire moto refused to let Durham , who was showing signs of fatigue after his brilliant charge in the 250 class, get by . Danny Dejet to o k his 360 Bultaco to a third overall with 3-4 placings. • Harley-Davidson presents...
