Texas Motocross Championship - Round One Mosier Valley By Greg Labbe EULESS, TEX., JUNE 20 The five race Texas State Motocross Championship opened with a roar this weekend as over 700 riders flocked to the lush, beauti- ,42 ful Mosier Valley track, located midway between Dallas and Ft. Worth. They came to try their hand at championship caliber racing, Amateur and Pro, on -what is undoubtedly one of the finest motocross tracks in the Southwest, and by day's end everyone got their fill of MX. With four qualifiers being run in the 125 Novice class, two in most other classes, and consolation motos after all the qualifiers, a total of 43 motos were run during the day, so from the time practice started at 7 :00 a.m. 'til the last moto was over at 7:50 p.m., it was wall to wall, dynamite motocross. The racing program was slowed somewhat by a high injury rate, and by the need for constant watering during the second set of motos. Dust was becoming a factor at the conclusion of the first set of motos, proving the even a track as superbly prepared as Mosier Valley was, must succumb to Mother Nature's blazing summer sun. :J Today, and in the ensuing four weeks, serious riders from allover Texas would find out just how much progress they had made in the last year of competition and training. This year, as opposed to last, the classes seemed to be fairer in so far as riders racing in their proper divisions. The Novices looked like Novices, the Intermediates looked like In termediates, and the Experts definitely looked like Experts. Especially Danny Doss. Doss, coming back from injuries and riding a very trick Banke prepared Honda, put good distance between himself and San Angelo's Mel Newman after getting by on the first lap of the first 125 Expert qualifier. By the end of the moto, Danny was long gone. In the second qualifier Morris Baker from Marfa moved his Honda quickly to the fron t bu t was challenged all the way to the flag by Richard Reeves. When the final rolled around, everyone waited in. anticipation for Danny Doss to come around but ' it was not to be, since he blew his transmission coming off the line. Instead it was Yamaha mounted Dicky Turnbo with the holeshot, After a sixth in his qualifying moto, Dicky came back to destroy the 125 Experts in the second moto, winning by a 20 second margin over second place ' Me l Newman. Newman still took overall honors with Morris Baker second and Turnbo third overall. By far the finest race of the day was the rust 250 Expert qualifier where Wyman Priddy, the elder statesman of Texas motocross, dueled wheel to wheel with Roger Brown the entire moto, They passed and repassed each other at least 20 times, four times in the last one third of a lap. At the checkered flag it was Priddy slipping his Bultaco under the Perrin Cycles sponsored Can-Am of Roger Brown for a narrow victory. The second 250 Expert qualifier saw Gene Durham take his Penton Central sponsored orange tanked Penton to a wire to wire victory despite the fine charge through the pack by Darrell Hollingshead on a Husky. In . the final, Wyman Priddy, Gene Durham and Roger Brown went after it until the 16 year old, Brown, had mechanicals. Priddy and Durham finished in that order for the second moto and overall. In the Open Expert class it was Wyman Priddy again, but this time the challenge came from Ricky Kidd. Kidd took his Penton to the rust moto victory ahead of Priddy as they ran off and left the rest of the pack, but in the second moto Wyman got it back as he brought his Bultaco across the line in first place with Randall Tarter and Ricky Kidd close behind. For the overall it was Priddy, Kidd and Tarter. Because full prize money was paid in each of ' the qualifying motos for the Experts, the total purse ballooned from $2000 to $2300. It was a generous decision by Promoter Devaughn Mitchell which met with overwhelming approval from the riders. ' • Results in ' Results Section.
