In the first start of the Scratch Main, Kosta was on the pole going into the south tum when leaders Speedy (J o e ] Sp isak and Robin Hood overcooked it on the outside, both taking a spill that stopped the race. Kosta moved up again to get the lead after a restart. Pat Guthrie took the Third Division Main lcad away from Fireball Bollinger, the San Diego rider who races in a black leather tuxedo complete with bow tie, flower, and wh ite gloves. Louis Kossuth, certainly the number one star among the youngest, and some of the oldest fans at South Bay, dialed in on a fast groove for an easy win in the Junior Speedway contest, The race for second was left to Vic Robeldo and third place finisher Joe Donaldson. Rubeldo rides the pole in classic form while Kossuth goes higher b ut much faster. At the end of the series one lucky rid er will be the win ncr of a new motorcycle. All riders are eligible for thc bike drawing, as well as a number of other prizes, as long as he has entered at least eight of the 11 races.. This was the second race of the series and with the inspiration of that new bikc aU the riders seemed to be putting out a little extra. This extra push was well exhibitcdin the 250 Pro race. As the gate dropped on the first moto , Mark Hatdey (Suz) moved into an immediate lead after a solid holeshet and Dave Haugh (Mai) followed in second, A battlc for third was raging between Hal Strauss, who now held the position, and Jim Tassano, who was eagerly tTY:ing to take it from him. allowcd Tassano (Mai ) to pass Strauss (Mai ), a very commendable move for any rider. Hateley . and Haugh were running first and second but on the Co fourth lap Hateley made one wrong move and Haugh was right there to inherit his lead, and won the first moto, The second moto appeared to be an instant replay of the first as Hateley grabbed the holeshot, Haugh and Strauss followed in second and third. Strauss went down on the third lap and q Tassano moved right in from fourth. Strauss re-entered the , race several positions behind as Haugh and Hateley once again fought it out for the lead. It was extremely tight as Haugh attempted to overtake Hateley but, as in the first moto, he succeeded and took his lead right to the checkered flag . Haugh took the overall win leaving Hateley with second overall. By the end of the race Strauss had moved up to exhibit some fine riding and finished third overall after an exciting duel with Tassano in the very last comer. Another spectacular race Came in the 125 Junior ranks. Close to 40 riders entered in this class gave some stiff competition to first place winner Mark Abler, but his toughest competitor was Steve Allensworth who rode on his tail throughout the race. At the end of the second moto both riders were tied in points. Thc overall tIDally went to Abler (Suz ) however Allensworth , who rides for Bill Boren Honda, really put in a fine performance , along with Doug Spiker who also rides for Bill Boren Honda. Spiker did poorly in the first moto, fin ishing seventh , -bu t in the second moto Spiker h auled o ff to the win, giving him t hird ov erall . • Results in Results Section. Oh you Kidd .By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL.,JULY 7 Gordie Kidd charged by Mike Tidwell in the Open Money Short Track, held off Dylan Neihart, and went on for the win. The -only problem was, he didn't know the race was over. Gordie went down right after the checkered was thrown, but for some reason, didn't sec thc flag and was desperately trying to get his bike started while friends were just as desperately trying to tell him the race was over and he had won. Finally the message connected and Gordie moved off into th~ pits. Neihart was second and Tidwell
