The Ban dits st re t ched o ut their lead to six points. but th e Sharks pulled off a clean sweep in the 11 th race, p ulling the sco re back to just a two-p o int lead. The Dynamic Duo, J eff Sexton and Brian Short. came right back fo r the Bandits with th eir o nly sweep of the nigh t . pu tting th em out fro n t aga in by six po ints. The high-point riders race (Event 13) we n t t o th e Sh arks with a clean sweep , but th e fo ur points still left them down by two. Final sco re. 38 Sharks, 40 Bandits. Scrat ch racing for Division Two riders is so m ethin g new this season. It is hoped by the promoters th at this will help prepare more riders for team racing. Tom Moreley won the Division Two Scratch Main . Division One Handicap Main honors went to Dan Toomey. His Bandits' teammate. Dubb Ferrell, took second. San Bernard ino, J une 30 By Rex Reese Recently, the San Bernardino Sizzlers had been down and o ut....rith every te arn in the leagu e taking a turn at giving th em a good kick in the lea the rs. On t op of that, J im Fishback became the latest addi tion t o the injure d list. r Above it all however. and remar kably enough . the Sizzler s came back to nigh t to break t heir h omest an d losin g streak as th ey faced off th e Ven tu ra Sharks in a battle down to the wire. Sizzlers Ron Preston and Larry Shaw were the mo st dynamic performers of the eve ning as t hey gained two sweeps with Preston winning two heats. The Sharks were nipping at the Sizzlers ' heels with only a difference of tw o o r three points. but had it not been for the tighter te am rid ing by Berdoo, the story cou ld've been different. Ron Preston wa s th e holesho t kin g. and in th e fin al he didn 't d isappoint any bo dy when he grab bed th e lead foll owed by Sh aw who was blocking o ff Sims and Bobby Schwartz . When th e dust had settled. th e Sizzlers had sunk th e Sharks 42-36. Gre g Wilhite was th e winner o f t he Second Division Scratch Main , wh ich is a re fr esh ingl y quic k an d d irty change from the regular heat sys te m; wh ile th e big bo y s saw th e Ventura crowd get so me me asure of revenge as Dave Sims picked up the Handicap Con solation and Rand y Marsh to ok th e Main. 4 Charlie 5 Raceway ycle The Nati onal - Spe edway League standings show the Bakersfield Ban di ts in first place wi th the Ventura Sharks in a strong second. When these two teams me t at the Ventura Fairgrounds, home of the Sharks, the first three events were even sp lits in score. Irwind ale, July 1 By Rex Reese Last night Berdo o won on th eir own turf whi ch had the m st oked and ready to rip to nig ht. Unfortunately a differe nt fate was in store for the m when they rolled ou t on the track. as the surfacing was sat ura ted t o a mud d y co nsistency, making it super ta cky and yucky . The other problem for Berdoo was obvious : Mike Bast . Bast. ho wever , wasn't the only problem to confront the Sizzlers; there was also Bruce Penhall an d Norm Denny. First heat off the line they went to work an d swept Dean Forman and Rod Sexton righ t under th e ru g. Near to fa r - Dubb Ferrell , Bert Ha rki ns an d Billy Gary lined up in t he Scra tch half at By the final, the Sprockets had put a 10 poin t lead over Berdoo. With Den ny backing hi m up . Mike Bast le d the final over Mark Cherry and Larry Shaw. But on the second lap. Cherry popped by Norm t o put a squeeze on Bast which gave the cro w d some fireworks to really c h e e r about. Bast won it an yway , with a possible sweep destroyed by Cherry as the Sprockets took it 45 -33. To co mpound th e loss suffered by San Bernardino. Sizzler Rod Sexton co llided with G uy Waterson in a Handicap semi. Waterson had been leading as Sexton was setting up to pass o n the insid e. when ' Guy's engine ap p ar en tly bro ke its piston. Sexton bit Waterson as he was slo wing down, and cau gh t a footpeg in the chest when he was th rown. Rod was rushed t o the ho sp ital, suffering brok en ribs and - a p ossibl e co llap sed lung. Costa Mesa, Ju ly 2 By Dennis Greene T he ever- growin g list o f broken bones was reall y evident Friday a t Costa Mesa. It was an o pen n ight of com pe t itio n (no team even t ). More tha n a do zen top ride rs were not on hand because of injuries. Bill Meister, J im Fishback. Danny Bec ker. are all out with broken fee t; Mike Ko n le , Wayne Lewis o ut with broken wri sts. The list goes on and so goes the show. Twenty-four events of ra cin g has its ups and downs. Irwin Moon went up in the air off the startin g line in the first event of the night in front of a full house, co m in g down hard on his tail bo ne. li e was help ed fro m the trac k and called it a night. Dubb Ferrell had another fine n igh t. working h is way in to both Main E" erits . v Dubb won t he Handicap Main for the second time th is season at Costa Mesa, and did it from the 40-yard line ; getting past Sonny and Steve Nutter an d Bill Gray with no trouble then working o n Ron Preston for two laps to take . the win on his U.S.-built Fairchild Special. Speedway. U.S. National Mr. Speedway Champion Mike Bast. showed his st yle w ith an easy Scratch Main "in over Du b b Ferrell , Dave Sims and :'oIorthern Number One Alan Christian. Bakersfield, Ju ly 3 By Dennis Greene One o f th e biggest scores of the season was run up b y th e League-leading Bakersfield Bandits as th ey put the Orange County Eagles away by 26 points. Their total o f 52 to the 26 for the Eagles fell short o f the all-time hi gh o f 54 for the L.A. Irwindale Sprockets. when they put the same Eagles away with just 24 points. Ever y pair of riders on the Bakersfield tearn got at least one clean sweep. J eff Sexton led the way in the second half of th e show, winning th e lIandicap Main Even t from t he 50-yard line . Alan Ch rist ian t o o k second, bu t had to race his head off af ter bein g p ut back all th e way to th e 70-yard line for a r olling start. This coming Saturday night the Bandits will play host to the Ven t ura Shar ks. The second half of th e sh o w will be the fourth running of the Firecracker Derb y, held o ne week late because o f so man y rider s o ut wi th injuries . Results in Results Section. ~
