Mad about Bruceor is it Bob? After leading the 250cc class a t th e Baja 500 by 25 minutes, a nd being at approximately the sam e total elapsed time a t the three-quarter mark as even tual overall winners Roesele r and Bakken , t he team of Bruce Ogilvie and Bob Rutten di d not even receive an acknowledgement of thei r existence in your race repo rt of t he 500. It is too bad th e Harley-Davidson broke a front ax le 100 m iles from the finis h - b ut after such a n incredible ride, leading overall, and precipitating a heavy volume of perspirat ion fr om th e members of Team Husky in anticipation of a possible defeat , surel y your reporter co u ld have seen fit to say so meth ing about Ogilvie's and Rutten's efforts? ! M. THUNDERPUSSY Hemet, Calif. Small request l\l y two yo ung so ns are avid speedway fan s but are p ar ti cul:,rly interested in J u nior Speed way. Sin ce o ur closest track is Irwindale and they d o no t have Junior Spee dway events, I find m ysel f h aul in g a ca r lo ad of youngste rs all th e wa y d own to Oran ge Co u nty Fairground s on Friday nigh ts. Ven tura is too far away. I can ' t ta ke these kid s to th e t rac k I wo uld like to know if your writer was present at the Mammoth Mo untain Motocross , and if so was he awake. asleep, in a stupor d ue to altitude, drunk, with a girl who was ge ttin g too much or not enough (recreation, I m ean), all the above , or none of the above. Since when does a race the caliber of Mam moth , whic h draws 500 sp ort sm en riders, and 300 Experts, plus many top name pros rate m in iscu le co ve rage , wi th broad generalities and n o specifics . Fo r instance , Mike Bell, did win the Open class ; however, Pat Richter hel d a 32 second lead on Bell until his shocks faded, but still managed a third. In the second moto, Richter took first with a 40 second lead on Bell, who saw his second place fade to Marty Tripes. Bell, regained second when Tripes lo st his shocks. Very little was said about the track.. the scenery , the town, or the people who st aged the ra ce. The track has to be the top tr ack in California. It has every possible o bstacle to test a rider's skill and en d u rance . The town opens its doors and hearts to the riders and spectators. ....nen I cam e into town, riders we re tuning their bikes in the streets, driveways , sidewalks, and service stations. The people donated their services and tim e to see that this ra ce went off without a hitch . I sin cerely hope , that in the future when a ra ce the cal ibe r o f Mammoth comes up, that yo u sen d someone who has motocross at heart, rather than someone who writes in the broad generalities of a fifth grader. This sport ne ed s all the help it can get. WILLIAM R. SCH MIDT S.V .S. Pro m o t io ns If you believe that J od y Weisel do esn't have motocross at heart , you ob viously do n't kn ow J od y.
