been in Britain m ost of th e w eek, but they had been trainin g down at Portsmouth lookin g for stam ina rather than advan ce co u rse knowledge ! A false star t to th e fir st 40 minutes plus two laps leg ra ised th e tension, but it was the ice cool Russians who kept their heads and they stormed in to the lead. Kavinov fell, but Moisseev was laways ahead of the howling pack from the fall of th e metal gate to the chequered flag . Behind t he Russian at the end of the firs t lap was the Czech Anatoly Babo ro vsky , with Jim Pomeroy third, Harry Everts fourth, Fre nchman Daniel Pean fifth and Rob Hooper sixth. But disaster quickly put Hooper o ut. Moving into fifth place starting the second lap he discovered that his back brake had bro ken up when he ca me to slow down for th e tight righ t h an der at th e end of that straight. He went throu gh th e ropes, and o ut o f th e race. Pomero y mo ved in to secon d pl ace th at same lap , an d he was co n te nt to fo llow the Russ ian for a w hile , bu t on the te n th lap th e Ame rican ace tried once to go ahead, saw th e gap was clo sed, an d eased back . But a few hundre d yards later he tried again at a high speed jump. The fro nt wheel came down first though , and the bike cartwheeled on to the prostrate body. He leapt to his feet and started to straighten things out, but it was obvious th e crash had shaken him. That left Moisseev an easy win, with Everts not so far behind in second place , and the young Hudson, eighth on the first lap, now up into third place. Pomeroy might have taken fourth place, after Baborvsky had fallen for the third time, bu t Jim, too , took another fall , at the same place as his earlier mishap and he couldn 't catch the Czech again. Geo ff Mayes, another talented young Briton was ly ing seventh until o ne third dis tance when ignition failure p ut hi m out. Mikkola hadn 't last long in this one . A slow start and a couple of m edi ocr e laps heralded his departure. But surely he would do be tter in the next leg? Sadly he didn 't . From the start he was with the le adin g gro up but he and Hudson tangled, pu t ting them both the rear of the p ack. TIle Finn looked as though he might show just what he cou ld do as he passed six guys in o ne lap as he fou gh t to make up fo r that mistake, but another tumb le persuaded him to call it a day . Hudson kept go ing, but the sparkle was ou t of h is riding after a few laps. and he co uld o n ly m an age to pull through to 14th place despite th e ur ging o n of th e spectators. l\loisseev me antim e was notching up another 15 p oin ts fo r his world ch am p ionship bi d, wi th Ever ts again a very good second, th is time righ t from the off. Again Rob Ho oper fo un d it wa sn't his da y . Sixt h on th e th ird lap he too k a gen tle fall . on ly to be t rapped under the bike.
