By Dorde Woodruff OGD EN, UTAII , J UNE 20 J us t before t he first di rt tr ack event of the season on Memorial Day , th e Ogden Cycle Association converted their new (since ' '73) flat track to a IT course. The ju mp, n ot adequately tested before th e r ace be cause of rai n, turned out to be MX style. Those who merely change wheels on their MX bikes were no t displeased. Others reworked shocks and springs. In the meantime, the club cut down th e hei ght of the ju m p. The OCA 's dirt track is surely unique, nestled under high steel transmission towers and next to a substation, with the steep face o f the Wasat ch Mountains as a ba ckground. Leased from Ut ah Powe r, the present track is naturally flat, low-lying alkali desert, the next thing to a salt .Ila t , The club sprin kles and drags the tra ck for four nigh ts before each event, ending with an excellent surface. The water tru ck was m ade from an old asphalt tank, and the drag is the fourth improved design. The former track, just to the sou th, was hig her, hummocky, and had to be oiled, which the new one does no t. Clu b m em be rs do n't kn o w why the new track works we ll, whether it 's th e higb wat er t able , th e al kali , or th e particle size of the soil - it ju st does . A few who do n 't ride anyway, some doing quite well . . Versatile John Dial ogue in his green and white Desert Fox jersey came in second in the Open Amateur class on a Suzuki RM 370, the bike on which he p laced th e same in the Cherry Creek desert ra ce in May . It was the first time J o h n tried track racing. He found a used 21" Class C tire for his front wheel the day before the ra ce, a fter not being able to find a 19" wheel to fit his hub. Jerry II ill, 0-26 vice prez, did well with his borrowed RM, placing second in the fiercely co m pe tit ive Open Expert class. Dave Roberts (Bul), who won the 200 Expert class at Cherry Cree k, placed second today in th at class. The o nly girl rider was Stephanie Ch risten sen, tryi ng again in t he 100 Novice class after a badly broken leg last year, when so meone ce nterp un ched her d uring practice.
