Watkins threw up his hands when it started sprinkling hard again at 6 p.m., but with 140 riders in as man y vans lined up at sign in, he wen t afiead and sign ed them in. After one hour of van parading on the tra ck things began to look fast : and fast they were from mighty to mini. With only one spill th e whole night on the hard groove and only two re -starts "7" the fans were treated to the besty in riders, racing, and bikinis. Yes, this was annual bikini night at Ross Downs and beauty judges Charles Clark (Fox Dist.), T . C. Carter (Carter Yam), and Gary DeGeorge (Dal las Yam) could hardly decide. Also announcer Jack Rhodes tried a new wireless microph o ne that enabled him to get closer to the judging; however, after much scrutiny, 16 year old Brenda Jones, Tulsa, Oklahoma was unanimously chosen winner of the $50 prize. Back to racing. It was Terry Poovey's night, with big brother Teddy doing the tuning again . While weather still threatened, after all the qualifiers, the first Main event was the Open with Poovey quickest off the line followed by Buck Boren (Stovall Yam) and Shreveport, Louisiana Freddie Spencer with John Euell fo urth and Dallas Yamaha's Steve Gulledge coming on strong. Gulledge grabbed fourth then started a duel with Spencer and as the white came out the crowd was on its feet as Oulledge barely moved in to third with Poovey in a comfortable first and Broen second at the finish. The Mini-Mains were next with Carter Yamaha 's Roger Schellenberger winning the 60cc, Berryman Patton (Dallas Yam) the 80, Steve Pendergraft of Big D the 100, and Scott Adams the 125. The 250 Main was won by Ronnie Jones on a Bultaco, after Bobby Elliott on a Can-Am led much of the way. With three super tight 360 Semis run , it was anybody's guess on the Main but Fast Freddie Spencer was quickest in tum one followed by Poovey and Novice Daytona winner Mike Green (Bultaco Unlimited) of Ft. Worth. Poover grabbed first in the second lap however, wh ile Green dropped back to fifth and Buck Boren mo ved in third.
