At th e Oak Hill Hare Scrambles just south of Austin , promoter Clint Gehrke has offered at each of his cross will hold a pair of $ 15 0 0 Expert races o n the second and ninth of July . Amateur events will be included in the programs. bu t the lim elight will be on the large number of top Texas riders who will be in town fo r series rac es those two weekends. It should make for so me unforgettable ni ght motocross. As the ra cing go t underway for 100 enthusias ti c racers on another balmy Friday evening. the 125 nervous clas s got things go in g wi th a bang. About halfway to the first tum , one third of the 125 Nov ices de cided th at they hadn 't inspected the track · closely enough during' p rac tice , so the y h op p ed o ff their b ikes to ge t a better loo k..What they saw, however, were fly ing bodies and machines flipping end over end. Fortunately no one was injured and on the restart everyo ne got aw ay cleanly. Unfo rt unately, John Ed gar. who had holeshot the firs t start , was dead last off • of 'th e restart. He even tually worked his way to fourth overall in a field of 25 . Barry Briggs ran away wire to wire in the firs t moto but co uldn ' t get around Gene Sharp in the second. It was Sh arp in the winner's circle overall with Briggs second. In the 125 and 250 Intermediate class. Sam Fin ger co n tinu es to regain his winning form of old as he rode confidently to both moto wins for the overall on a 250 Honda. The rest of th e scores were a bit scr ambled. but Chris Sharp was second on a new 250 Yamah a and Donnie Moore was th ird. John Williams on from Killee n t rashed o ut the sp o kes on his 12 5 in practice , so he b or rowed Gary Parker's 250 C-A an d • rode it to fo urth overall. . Each of the last three times a different rider has claimed the bonus by be ttering a previous performance. This tim it was Derry Gardner on a 400 monoshock Yamaha blazing around the five mile co urse 19 times in the space of three hours. The previous high had be en 17 laps by the fleet Gary Parker. We must add . however. that Gardner, riding out of O 'Leary 's Yamaha. had the ad vantages of a course which ran faster backwards and had only one check point instead of three. He was st ill very fast . The fastest rider, t ho ugh . was Jackie O'Le ary, Trouble is Jackie had an MX Yamah a and tan k on his 250 subsequen tly had to stop abou t four times for gas. ' He and Gardner stayed close al l the way but Jackie fmall y had to settle for second. (It 's not nice to beat your boss Derry. ] Rick Corbin. las t month 's overall Am ateur. co uldn't get his Rokon to star t on the line so in his stead. Honda of Austin's super wrench Pat Feagin took his XL 250 Honda to first overall Amateur. A quickly improving Bob Edrington got the holeshot off the line from a Le Mans start and flew his 340 Rokon to first in th e 250-0pen class. J im Frank was second on a 500TT and David Cooper was third o n a 250 Yamaha. In th e 200-and-U11der class it wa s Bud J oss er and first on a I 75 Pen ton and Ge o rge Llo yd second on a 12 5 Penton.
