Jerry Symank (91) throttles to 2~pen victory at Austin Motocross Park. Cubans crush L.atin American Road Race Championship By Eduardo Leon Camargo MEXICO CITY, MEX., MAY 9 What happens when you host nine Latin American countries and you're not prepared to do so? WeIl, ' being optimistic, a bit disorganized you get some sad scenes and most imp ortan t , good fierce ' competition. That's the way it looked at the second ra ce of the " Campeonato Latino Americano de Motociclismo , held in Mexico City last weekend. M.X. races were important of course, , but no way as important as the big action packed road race. The teams from Venezuela, Guatemala, Brazil and Mexico were the winningest at the dirt. The bikes: mostly Yammies, CZs and Carabelas, Sunday was different. There was going to be a road race , one of the very few we're able to see in Mexico. The stars: Camaert from Colombia, Manini and Jose Cecotto from Venezuela. Gleen, Sifuentes and Garcia from Mexico and the 125 steamroller from ... guess where? Yes Cuba, which included Jose David Lazo , Ivo Gomez and Luis Arencibia. The 125 GP class was absolutely dominated by the MZs from the Cuba team with good huntin ' from Sanchez Armas (Yam ) and Sifuentes (Yam). In the 350 class Jose Cecotto, Johnny's brother got the holeshot and kept the lead till lap 19 when his right hand quit. He had an accident six months ago and it still hurts. Camaert from Colombia was playing runner-up and found himself leading after Cecollo's incident. Another Venezuelan, Cardoso, riding another Yamaha got the second position. Eddy Aleman just recovering from the earth quakes in his native Guatemala rode another water cooled Yamaha to third. The winning parade was completed by Mexican star Jaime Gleen from the Coatzy Moto Team. "Next year will be different." That was the most heralded statement at the track, at the hotel, and at the airport. We really hope so, and we also hope to see cap able people promoting races in our country and inviting American riders, as well. .• Baja 500 13 Starte rs 13 Finishers Symank dominates AustinMX By Greg Labbe AUSTIN, TEX., JUNE 6 e o -~o - 1 FIRST non smokong petroleum ;] mmIJ]LU BE • I FIRST non fouling petroleum FIRST ad vertised 50·1 petroleum ~ MOTHER'S MILK The'Secret Weapon .for the Long Haul ••• Four-Cycle Dependability for your Two-Cycle - On a simmering summer day, Austin Motocross. Park ran 120 riders through full program of exciting (but hot) motocross com- a petition. Dust was never a problem but the heat still took its toll of the unprepared and the out of shape. Bob Murray came over from Houston on a trick looking Maico , ran a consistent race, and captured the overall Open honors. Carson Cooper on a Yamaha in fourth. and Bill Besa on a Kawasaki in fifth ; garnered their first trophies today. Hope there are plenty more to come guys, The race of the day saw Uoyd Longmire (Pen), Scott Robinson (Suz), and Dave Fredricks (Yam) engaged on a titanic struggle. Locked wheel to wheel for every lap of both motos, they passed and repassed each other while leaving the rest of the 250 Novices far behind in their wake. Longmire prevailed with a 2-1 score, Robinson Was second (1.2) and Fredricks (3-3) was third. Dave Fredricks probably could have done better, but as always he was afraid of marring the custom paint job on his gas tank. Jerry Symank dominated a small field of 250 and Open Experts in a combined class. Symank, from Dallas on a 370 . Suzuki, went on to win both motos after dueling Dean Mizes (370 Suz) in the fast moto and Chuc k Loftin (250 Yam) in the second. Robbie Jones. riding for only the third time as an Expert, swept both motos of the 125 Expert class, Jones ran away and hid in the fITSt moto, smoking the class by a good 30 seconds. He had to figh t for the second moto win, unable to pass a flying Buddy Kutzer until Kutzer's chain developed two ends with only about a lap to go. • I Ask your local dealer for Duralube Crown Pr od u c ts 153141h Proctor City oI2Irt~~~~rl~ 91745 Simmy Tanner D id. 11213 Roseto" Ave. Artes ia, CA 90710 213·924-2111 Whee'sport 2424 N .E.
