. - Speedway Central HANFORD, CAL, JUNE II Ride rs and promoters overcame some unusual conditi on s in orde r to put on a speedway p rogram for the King's Dist rict Fair. A freak rain and an arena _even t that went to within three hours of race time made t rac k preparations a nightmare , but Harvey Bakker, master of the Han ford dirt, put together a fine track and the racing went quite well. Several new stars' presence was felt tonight. In Handicap heats Tom Morley. Tom Ferris, both of the "new star" ranks, took their heats, and Max Koemans, back from an early season injury, took his_fro m the 50 yard line. Track favorites Jack Martin , Grant Salyers and Dan Huckans earned transfer spots, but not easily. Scratch racing co n finned what was becoming obvious: The vets were having a rough time. On ly Salyers and Koemans were able to pull off heat wins with Lindwall and Ferris taking-any line available for the other two heats. The Mains distilled into 50 ·50 situations. Koernans, Salyers, and Hu ckans carried t he banner for the vets in the Handicap , facing Ferris, Lindwall, and Garnett Thistlewai te , Ferris did it again. Saly ers made uP ' his 5 0 ya rd handicap , bu t Ferris was n ' t be in g passed. So Gr an t settled for second knowing th ey 'd m eet again in th e scrat ch feature. Mee t th ey did, along wi th' Koemans and Lindwall for good measure. The ga te went up and Ferr is jarred everyone with an excell ent gate. He go t into tum one firs t and then things began to h appen : Pos itions changed so fast that no one co uld keep up wi th it . Everyone but Lindwall go t a tas te of firs t pl ace and when it was all over , Saylers h ad his revenge . • Ridgerunners .$1200 series By Gerry Reagan WATSONVILLE, CAL.,JUNE 6 The Ridgerunners dumped loads of sawdust and wood chips into their track this month in order to· prepare for the second race o f their five race series. It was well worth while as 277 riders, in clud in g 47 Experts, showed up. The Experts are vying for a share in the $1200 to be aw arded at the end of the ser ies. In the 125 Expert class it was Mike Marquez (Hus) getting the holeshot in the firs t m oto with Jim Lesniewski (Hus) holding a goo d second. J im go t by on the fo urt h lap and began to pull away but he seized over the jump by the announcing stand on lap seven. Marquez now was being pressured by his lo cal ra cing buddy Jeff Watts (Hu s) . The two, riding like they were tied together, began to pull away from the rest of the pack and as they . came around the last co m er before the fin ish Watts m ade a last ditch attempj to pass. Down the hill to the checkered flag, Watts pulled alongside Marquez but Mike was abl e to hold h im off as they crossed the line within inches of each other. - . In the second moto it was Watts out in fron t on t he first lap but he was soo n passed by Danny "Magoo" Chandler (KTM) and Paul Turner (Suz) , Chandler began to pull away and the race settled into pretty much of a follow the leader event until the ninth lap when Turner le t Watts and Kelly Hardman (Hon) get by. The race ended with Chandler way in front, Watts second and Hardman t hird. The two se conds were enough to net Watts a first overall, as Chandler DNF 'd the first race and Marquez just co uld n ' t get it together in the second nloto . ' For the Open Expert clash , Chandler had never been beaten at t his tra ck and the word was out that Pat Richter was the man to do it. Off the line it was Rich ter followed by Paul Mar ino (Mai) and Gary Murphy (Suz). Ch andler was lost bac k in seventh . When t hey cam e ou t of th e back sec tion Richter liad m oved way out in fron t and Chandler up into second . Danny was n ' t able to close the gap an d the race ende d with Rich ter 16 seconds ah ead. In the second moto it was Murphy wi th the holesh ot followed closely 'by Chandler and Richter. Chandler turned on th e gas an d m oved in to firs t, but was soon p assed by Richter wh o reall y stretched ou t the lea d . Murphy held o n to a go od third throughout mo st of th e ra ce bu t threw a chain near the en d and ha d to set tle for a sixth, which netted him a fourth for the day. Paul Marino rode to a co n sisten t fourth" in both motos to fini sh third overall. Rob Stuart (Hus), Ken Brumblay (Hus) and Dale Pirlo (Yam ) dominated their respective divisions of the 125 Novice class , ea ch of them winning both motes. Pirlo had some trouble in the first moto getting by Dennis Rowedder (Hon) whom he finally passed on the las t lap. John Hodge sorted ou t his new Can -Am by the second moto to finish third for a fifth o verall. With the second race of the se ries co mp le ted I t 's Pat Richter , who was no t even present for the first ra ce, in the lead followed by Dennis Brand, J eff Watt s, Mike Marquez /J im Lesniews ki (tie d) and Danny Chandler in th at o rder. Kirk Woods then came back on his Can-Am to ~Iace second behind Dennis Rowedder (Hon 1+1) in 125 Novice. The second Divis ion 125 Novice went to Bret Stevens (Hon I +2) after a hard fight with Bob Stuart (Hus 3+1). In 125 Amateur, Kell ,; Hardman (Ho n ) and - Mike Schalow (Yam) swapped firsts and seconds with Hardman taking th e overall. As the 250s came to the line it was . Danny Schmidt and his Bultaco taking both motos in the first Novice Division, Thomas Wilkleman took home -seco nd with a Husk y and 3+2 record. The other Division was all Suzuki as John Lupo put firsts ba c k to ba ck while Rob Robison pressed hard with a 3 +2 finish. In 25 0 Amateur, it was all Rich Voss as his Bultaco won each time out but not without a little worry from J err J acobson who pushed his Kaw to third and second. In Open Amateur, Bob Turner (CZ) took home the three foot tall Bi-Cen tennial trophy with consistent wins. When it came tune for the money boys, Mike Marquez drove his Husky 125 past the checker both times but not without so m e great racing with Honda mounted Alan Rohrer (2+3) and a great duel w ith Paul Turner who placed second in the last rnoto, In the 250 Experts, it was Rich Timossi with back to back wins on a Suzuki, and Dan Gerry took second place m oney aboard his Honda. The Open Experts diced for some time, but Steve Kusanovich took home the b ig money. Steve and his Su zy won the last moto after a fourth pl ace the first time around which ha d Charles Halcomb ta kin g the chec ker on a Husky .
