J ack Smith o n a Bul borrowed from Gary Smith bounced by Wine to take over th e le ad . J ack continued to st retc h it out while three rid ers battled behind for second. This was Jack 's first race on a 25 0 , but you couldn't tell it by th e way he rode, Ed Wine, Paul Nicholson 'an d David Callaway were wh eel to wheel, ri ght up to the final flag. Callawa y , on his Kaw, maneuvered his way around Wine and followed in Smith's du st to finis h second. Nicholson too beat Wine out for third, bu t all fou r riders received trop hies for their fine efforts. A big combination class of 100·1 25 Beginner/Novices were run together. Beginner Allan Ronska led th e Novices the whole way and reall y showed them how to handle a 125 Yamaha. Jay Bales started out in second but Robert Bums made short work of his spot. Kirk Johnson got by Jay also and slipped into third. The only Beginner out of the whole bunch, ' Ronska, was the gold holder. The Mini Experts were rea!l y hot, and it was Bobby Garabedian who lit the match and smoked them all. • Results in Results Section. In his second ra ce, he was fifth on the first lap , fourth on th e second. an d th en charge d on to first again in .t he final laps , narrowl y leading Dave Peters at th e fini sh . Hugh Good (Ilon ). had close finishes with different runnerups in both of his motos, Go od and Don -Brown were previously the chief sco rers in winning th e High School Championship for · Helix High of La Mesa. They are backed with an organized team with titles - pit boss. manager and others. Marty Tripes' feature win didn't appear easy. Mike Stearns (Suz) led the first race start to finish while Tripes' came up from fifth to ' fass Mike McGowen. Hoffman (Yam at least twice for third, and finally Jim Martin to finish second to Steams. Steams led again from the start in the second race but overcooked a tum on the first lap and was far behind when he recovered. Tripes led from then on to • win (2· 1). Results in Results Section.
