Marty stuck t o Gaston lik e g l ue a n d kept pushing th e World Ch ampion to th e limit. Gaston co uld n' t pull aw ay from th e yo u n g , st ro n g ri d e r an d t he Champ ke p t d arting glances ov er his shoulder as he tried harder to put some d irt between h ims elf and h is rival. On the third lap Mart y lo oked down at the rear right sid e o f hi s bike . His righ t foo t had been fee lin g so m e t h ing was wrong in the brake as the peda l kep t tapping his b oot sa le. It wa s o n ly a min or problem ; the bra ke cab le was bein g hi t by th e spo ke s of the rea r wh eel. Mar t y had dropp ed back a little so he started push in g harder to catc h Gast on whe n th e Honda br oke o u t from unde r hi m wi th th e rear hub smashing and th e st eerin g races co ming apart. This put Marty o u t of the race after five laps a nd left Gaston all alo ne in first pl ace w it h no o ne even close. . The tightening nut o n th e st eering stem wa s tighten ed d own all the way but still th e fro n t end was wobbl y . Ho nda ' s effort in Bel gium ca m e to a de pressing hal t. At the first co rn e r Gast on was third ' but b y the en d of th e lap he had pass ed both riders, Greisch and Goinger , one c om in g off a jum p a nd the other th rough a tight corner. Th e res t of th e race was Ga s ton 's, a nd he, stretch the lead wi th out a sin gle challenge t o fif t y seconds. At the checkered flag Ve lky had third pl ace with t he English rider o nly 2 .2 seco nd s be h ind .
