In Division II, Mike LupoId took the win after one restart while Kirt Tardiff ran a close second. • CMC National at SOHVP By Sallee Hilton SACRAMENTO, CAL., MAY 30 & 31 On Sunday, all Novice and Intermediate riders rode two motos, then got a rest/repair break overnight and ro de the third mota 32 on Pro day , Monday. The course was about two miles lon g, and only suffered slightly when the water truck broke down, and a replacement had to be sent for. The mighty Magoo (Danny Chandler), in the first 125 Pro ride, was first off the line and built up a lead by the end of the first lap with Dave le~. Carlson , FMF rider fro m Anaheim, trying to ca tch him. Carl son was followed by Bruce McDougal (Hon), J im Hale (Hon), Danny LaPorte (Suz) and m ore, all so close it loo ked like a ten way figh t for second place ! Th is went on for five lap s, during whi ch time Magoo go t furthe r away. McDougal's exhaust system was da ngling , an d Carlson and LaPo rte tr aded po sition s severa l times. Midway in th e six th lap, Magoo came ar ou nd th e lap check station with out a seat and holding the gas tank on with one hand . Either Magoo has lots o f m echanics, or th ere were a lot o f very fo olish spec ta tors want ing to " help". Norto n 's younger brother and he were sharing a bike , built from parts of each one's personal bikes, and it had blown the crank the da y before. More parts were borrowed from friends, but the rebuilding was going too slow to make the first moto, A sympathetic Sue Wood, the only female rider of th e event, offered her Honda; Norton got to the line, but the pack was already a half a mile out on him. By the end of five laps he had passed 21 riders! The second moto for the 125 Pros belonged to LaPorte. Carlson took over second in the eighth lap and quit after the ninth for reasons unknown, putting McDougal secon d., Friedland was still in there for third . The $2400 p urse went to eight riders in each class, the 125 's cashing in were (in order) Dan ny LaPorte , Mike Marquez, Don Cantaloupi, Tim Lunde (Hon), Ro ber t Norton, Dave Carlson, Nick Rhine (Suz), and Jerry Brown (Yam). The 250's 'm o t o one got off after running two qualifiers and a consolation. Mark Hilton (Su z) got the hole shot and did a half en do in the first tum leaving Pat Richter (KTM), Kevin Henry (Bul), and Dennis Brand (Suz) leading the pack with Bob Elliott, for I'm gon na (huff, pu ff ) pass that guy (pant) if it 's th e last thing I (wheeze) do.
