Ca n-Am Ho dak a 14-year-old Mike Miller captured the Jr. Scratch Main event after a thrill ing race full of spills un aware that Bobby Klin e had re-m ounted and was well on his w ay to catch up. Klin e worked his way up thro ugh the pac k and moved in to fi fth place by the end of the first moto. In the second go, Kline grabbed the holeshot followed by Simons. In a repeat performance Kline went down again. in the same comer, leaving Simons with the lead. Kline re-mounted. within six laps had passed every rider, and was in hot pursuit of Simons. On the next lap Klin e passed Simons and pulled away for a nice lead, the moto win and second overall. In the sportsman classes the 250 Junior race provided the most excitement as Ben Schillaci. on his Cycle Products West Maico , jumped in to the lead. But his lead was short lived because on the second lap he was hit from behind. went down, and by the time he re-mounted the rest of the pack had passed. Ben. pushing hard, soon was re-claim in g fou rth place. In t he second moto Schillaci roosted in to the lead and went on for the w in with almost a half-lap margin . The 250 Pro race held a nu mber of surprises. One of the m was Dave Potts (Suco) riding a surprise Maico-Suzu ki comination. A lot of hard riding, co up led wi th a lo t of pure talent. mad e this one co mpeti tive package. In the second moto Potts an d Hal St rauss were ru nn ing one -two when they came up to lap a slower r ider. The slower rid er managed to knock do wn both Po tt s and Strauss allowing J im Tassano (Mai) through for the win. After a race stopping spill on the first lap, the articulate 14-year-old you ng man said, "Scott Saint J ohn got too close to the pole. I could n 't hel p it. I ran over him. They sto pped the race because a man hurt was on the track. That is why we go t to restart." Sain t J ohn return ed to the restart and ran second to Miller.
