he set Ro b Morrison on his ear to win
the second heat. Fishback got his two
heats later, faced off against Bruce
Penhall, by falling off when he couldn't
keep u p with him. In the 11 th heat,
Morrison got revenge against the Animal
as Fis hback ate it in the first turn at the
start while Ro b went on t o win .
The final was only a formality as
Bru ce Penh all led, fo llo wed by . Mike
Bast who kept the back d o or shut on
Dean Forman an d Mark Cherry . As they
finis he d, Bast ? being a go o d guy , le t
Bru ce have th ewin; both riders took th e
vic tory lap like tw o go od buddies
should as the Sprockets h ad skewered
th e Sizzlers 53·25.
Dan Waller won the Second Division
Main, while in the . Handicap Main,
former Second Division rider Steve
Fortune came close to setting the tr!!-ck
on fire in one of the most electric
performances that any new rider has
made. His semi saw Steve blow away
Bru ce Penhall in a round of racing that
had the crowd on its feet screaming. In
the Main , Fortune startled everybody
again as he too k the lead over a
heavyweight field which included Bast,
Penhall, and Fishback. After about four
laps, Jim and Mike had elbowed their
way up behind Steve ; then the Animal
drove on to barely lead Fortune to the
finish an d win the Main, with Mike Bast
th ird.

The O range County Eagles threw a
mo n ke y w rench into the drive of t he
Los Angeles Sprockets even though the
Sprockets got a clean sweep in the first
even t for five points. T eam cap tain Rick
Woods got his riders together and, with
a fine team effort. the score started to
add up. The Eagl es ca m e right ba ck in
the second event and got their firs t
clean sweep of the night, tieing th e
score 6·6. They split Event Three , score
9-9. Then. in Event -Fo ur, the Eag les got
. th ei r sec o nd sweep of the night, m akin g
the score 14 to 10 . The next th ree
events were spl it s. Events Eight ' a nd
Nine went to the Sprocke ts 4-2 in each.

events. Then in Event 12, Rick Woods
pu lled o ff the win with his teammate
Mike Muntean in for second and t heir
team's t hird sweep of the night, m a kin g
the score 38·34, Eagles.
The f mal event, for h igh po in t riders
only, lo o ked like the Spro cke ts m igh t
pull it off with Mike Bast and Bruce
Pe n hall up against Mike Mun tean and
Alan Ch rist ian. Bast wo n it for th ree of
the fo ur p o ints need ed to m ove in to a
tie br eake r , b u t h is teamm a te , Bru ce
Pen hall , got fo urth an d n o p oin ts. Mike
. Muntean go t second and Alan Christ ian
p ick ed u p o n e poin t fo r th ird, giving the
win to the Eagles, 41 to 37.
The Ro lle rb all of Speedway , or
Second Divis io n , saw Dic k Pruett work
his way through downed riders in both
his heat race and the Main for his first
victory.
Division One Handicap honors went
to Mark Cheri. with a lo t of pressure
being added b y Alan Christian and Rick
Woods.
The half-time show, or Junior
Speedway, went to Mike Miller and even
the J u nior riders had their share of crash
and burn.

T he Eagles may have been flying h igh
aft e r th eir win on t hei r home track over
th e L.A . Sprockets. but they were jus t
fair game for the Bakersfield Bandits.
Dubb Fe rr ell led the way for the
Bandits with II points to his cr ed it ,
captain Jeff Sexton added nine and
Brian Short eight. The final score was
42 t o 3 6.
The second half of the show,
Handicap racing, was a thriller all n ight,
with o uts ta ndin g rides, turned . in by
Rick Woods, Dubb Ferrell and Jan
Ballard. J an wen t on to win the
Handicap Main, with Bill Gr ay ta kin g
second. Bill is ,riding one of the new
Wes lake m otors owned b y Pete Smiley.
It looks like th e be st way to win the
Divis ion Two trophy at Bake rsfiel d is t o
be a write-in res erve rider. Aga in, like
last wee k, the winner 's name (Randy
Tompkins) was not on th e p ro gram.
