Avels heads up Snake Chase By Dale Brown CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL .. JUNE 6 Jamie Avels (400 Yam) led from start to finish to record his first ORA win of '76 in th e 66-mile Snake Chase hare scrambles. With Avels, sponsored by 29 Palms Yamaha, out in front at the bomb, Rich Mark (370 Suz) moved up to second and started to gain on Jamie , but his carburetor worked loose on the beginning of the second loop. Tim Bowman (400 .CZ), who had crashed about midway through the first loop and worked back up to third by its co mpletion, took second on Mark's retireme nt. Behind Bowman was Howard McCasla nd (360 Hus], the on ly other ride r close enough to the lead shou ld Avels falter. ' Bowman made up a lot of the gap on -the secon d lo op as the leaders busied the mselves lap pin g Beginners . A few miles out on the third loop, Avels 100 ked over his shoulder an d saw Bowman only 100 yards behind. Jamie sped up, but Bowman stayed with him for quite awhile. But for this day, Bowman's CZ was not handling well, with the front end flexing allover the desert. Avels' "elderly" Yamaha was working fine and he finished with a two-minute lead. The win moved Jamie , now in second, closer to points leader Bob Balentine, who had to get ready for Baja this weekend. For Bowman, itwas only his second finish this year. McCas land was running a strong third when he overshot his pit and had to come back. Returning to the course, turning to go the righ t direction, he was struck by another ri der ' and had his footpeg kno cked "o ff, Novice Shawn - Underwood (400 Yam) was running in fourth; he, too, never made the finish. That moved Tom Kibbe (400 Yam) up to third and hest av ed th ere, taking first Amateur as well . Along ,the way , he'd diced wi th Allen Meek, bu t Meek's b orrowed 400 Yamaha n ever made it to the finish. Phil Stumbo (250 CZ) worked his way from 14th to eighth before getting a flat rear tire. Nonetheless, he passed 'two more riders before the tire ca me off , the rim and a hill put an end to his progress. Lee Wilson III (175 Hus) moved up on the third loop to finish fifth and win the small-bore class. Jeff Cauby (250 Yam) , an Amateur, was sixth and the only 250 in the top ten. Small-bore Expert Pat Jones (Yam) was next, followed by Gus Paull (400 Yam), winning the Senior class. Ron Smith (400 Yam) b orrowed a bigger bike for this one, took ninth and third Open ' Ama teu r. First Novice Do ug Hurt rounded out the top ten on an other 400 "Y amaha.. Bernard Unhassobiscay (125 Hon) had an excellent race, wirming the 0·200 Novice class on his new bike. DRA b umped up Lori Farmer to Powder Puff Novice af ter a fin e ride as a Beginner. So Lori (C-A) we nt ou t and had a fine ride as a Novice, wirming the class since she was th e on ly girl to go all three ' loop s. Steve Zoller (250 , Yam) raced for only th e th ird tim e, but he led the Beginn ers all the way. Eric McCracken (125 Yam) was close beh ind for second.
