By David Maltais TlKKURI LA, FI NLA ND , MAY 23 Brad Lackey and . Roger DeCoster each won a .moto in Finland as the '5 00cc World ' Championship series hit the halfway :mark. Roger and BTad posted second and third fastest official qualifying t imes with ' 2.02.6 and 2.0 3.3 behind Pierre Karsmakers who rode a 14 2.02.2 during the one hour timing period Sunday morning. . The riders werc called out for the fillt race to begin at one thirty . Roger got to the line and put his bike in neutral to wait for the rest of the riders to line up behind the gate. When he got ready he pulled in on the clutch lever and pressed tile gear shift into RCar and the Suzuki shot forward and crashed against the starting gate ! Roger pulled the bike back . shocked to real ize that the clutch was not fully engaging, and had to 'usc . the front brake to hold the b ike back as it dug a trench in the soft sand. Lac kily the starter dropped the JtIIte as soon as everyone got behind and was ready to ' go. . Brad Lackey wasn't the first to the comer but he took a line far to the inside so that when the riders braked heavily from the top-gear flat-out one hundred meter straight for the sharp left drop off. turn at the end. Brad was up on th e berm edge of the track with Gerrit j ust a wheel ahead. . Graham Noyce and Roger did not fare as well. They were involved in a pile-up that took down six or seven riders. Louis Ristori got into a tank slapper that had him ricocheting off a hard bank and almost kissing a tree as he slammed into Graham's path. Graham braked hard , stalled the Maico engine and Jaak Van Velthovan crashed into him and landed on top of him. Graham had to struggle to push J aak off and get the Maico restarted before -he could get back into the race. Somehow Roger got pinned to the ground by Ristori and he had to get .ou t from underneath him before he could restart his Suzuki and start making up lost ground. Pierre Karsmakers had the lead as they came around for the first lap with Brad about four to five bike lengths behind. Adolf Weil lost his chances for a good • place when the tear-offs and the lens to his goggles were blown out along the start straight from the top gear speed. Until he finally retired. he could hardly see becaus~ of th e mud, sand and d Pierre and Brad were up front wi Gerrit making some progress toward two. Brad overtook Pierre halfw through the race and Pierre hung on b the Honda didn 't have the strength close the gap on the Husqvarna. Gerrit caugh t up to Brad and pass him on the inside going off a jump th was off camber to the left on the ne to last lap . To many it looked Ii Gcrri, could hold off 'Brad until checkered flag but Brad still had desire and the Husqvarna. was runni perfectly. Brad waited until th approached a comer that had the ro and he gassed it on the inside slipped under Gerrit to take the Ie and the win, his first th is year. Roger and Graham made it through the pack to finish seventh eighth . Noyce finishing fourt seconds behind DeCoster.
