The track promoter's son, Nick Sunday, won the 250 Expert division after the older Day brother, Chip, fell out of first place in the first moto, then DNF'd in the first lap of the second mo to while leading. In the first 125 Expert moto, the lead chan ged three times. After getting his usual holeshot, Day kept a bike length lead through eight laps before dumping it in a switch-back. Paul Williams was right there to lead the pack until he got off - with 10 stitiches in his chin to show for it. Jimmy Bagwell kept his distance in front, while Day reeled in everybody but Bagwell at the flag. In the second moto , Day blasted out front and left the battle for second to Paul Williams (who returned from the emergency ward in time to make the moto), Bagwell, and a pursuing Duayne Goodwin. Bagwell's second place finish gave him a second place in the pay line behind Johnny Day, with Goodwin third. Gene Englen, who now runs four K&N Yamaha shops in the Southwest, collected a crew of K&N mechanics, salesmen, wives and woofies and got everybody entered in some event. The K&N outing was co mplete with owner Englen's barbequed chicken. If he ever quits cy cling, Englen could make a living with that special brand of barbequed chicken. Lots of samplin' goin' on by the whole pit population! Looked like fun - and good support of the sport by dealer Englen. • Evans, Mizes rock Lockhart By DeWitt Henderson LOCKHART, TEX., MAY 9 Henry Evans of Austin took the 125 Experts and Corpus Christi rider Dean Mizes won the Open Experts as the two riders dominated Southwest Motocross Park action. Hairston,.Triumph chains & top time By Diane Polley MINERAL WELLS, TEX. , MAY 16 The one hundred and five riders and their cheering sections who turned out for the climb at the Moline Ranch enjoyed a very exciting day . In several classes the top riders were separated by just hundredths of a second and that's not even a blink of an eye. Tom Hairston on a 1000cc Triumph built by Big D Cycles used the time between his last ride in the 1500 class and the end of the Exhibition class to change to a chain tire. This turned out to be the winning combination when he topped the hill in 8.13 seconds to knock Henry Polley 's (750 Tri) 8.52 second time from the top. This was Hairston 's first top time win. The times in the I !l00 class were so close that it was almost unbelievable. First Gary Chandler on a 750 Triumph set a 8.53 which was the top time, then Henry Polley ran and set a 8.52. After a few more rides Mike Jones on a 1000 Triumph came to the line and he set a 8.54. In a situation like this the scorekeeper sure likes to have someone looking over his shou lder. Two other classes generating lo ts of interest were the 100 and 125. In both . these classes the. regular winner were really having to work to stay in the running. In the 100 class Troy Bullock on a Kawasaki went over the 350 foot hill in 13 seconds for first on his initial try. Troy was the second rider in this class so he had the pleasure of sitting back and watching the other contestants try to go that fast. •
