Cycle News is somewhat ca ug ht in the middle on this o ne . One one hand, Anne Mason sent us a pamphlet from Citizens Against Diamond Lanes urging that we get the preferential freeway lane experiment cut off. On the other hand, Russ Sanford at l\1.0.R.E. is trying to ge t CaiTran s to accept a " 50% occu pancy " cri terio n for bus /car p ool preferen ce lanes - which would b y definition include motorcycles. (A t · present, only bu sses and ca rs with three or more o ccupan ts may us e these lanes during freeway rush hours.] That tends to throw us a c urve, doesn"t it ? The sp ecia l freewa y lanes are intended to encourage energy-efficient travel , so for maximu m a dvan tage, you'd wan t the m to favor all energy-eff'icient modes , including small cars tha t do n't hold th ree peop le and mo torcycles. If th e "experiment" o n ly favors some, e n e r g y -save rs , at the expense of others , then it is unfair and should be terminated, right? Now since we know that the Times never grinds an axe or sets out to smear anybody, the transit plan must be a real rip-off, huh? Ordinarily , we bikers wouldn't have any special stake in m a ss transit. But there's this statistic that popped up back in the late 60's. Seems 80% o f the ca rb o u nd commuters inten.iewed said they either barely tolerated the driving chore or else downrigh t hated it. Wonder if it 's true? T hey're still out there driving (that's obvious) , possibly because they've never been offere d any th ing be tier. . Lord kn o ws , L.A . hasn 't had a decent alterna tive to the au tornobile in over a genera tion , (E xcept for mo torcycles, of co u rse .] Now if driving has become that un p leasan t fo r that m an y people, then anything that m igh t lure th em ou t o f their lea d-ba rge ca rs (an d co nseq u en tly o ut of t he way of us bikers) is almost worth a gamble.
