Franco Unc ini moved quic kly through to se cond pl ace behind Cecotto o n the ninth lap . Villa's machine was slowing, an d Finn Penti Korhonen moved ahea d of him for th ird . But John Dodds, qu ickest in practice, was on the move, too, and he moved in to third a lap later. Penti Korhonen made sa superb start in the 250cc race , but Walter . Villa forced his wa y into the lead on the seventh lap . Penti lost second six laps later, to Japanese st ar Takazumi Katayama. Gustaffson and Pons were fourth and fifth by now, but both crashed, yet again, and esc aped injury. Choukroun, went out, too, seized. . The news of both Tordi's and Buscherini's deaths had come through at th is time, and Johnny Cecotto was one of many riders to be deeply upset. He pulIed out of the 500cc ra ce. after just a few laps , more as a gesture of respect. Giacomo Agostini, disenchanted with the MV 500, had decided to switch to the new Suzukis, until the new MV Boxer engine is race ready. Agostini h ad broken the lap record several times in training, and was in pole posit ion . T he crowd were deligh ted to see him hold off Barry Sheene's strong challen ge in the earl y laps, bu t wh en Phil Read arri ved , Sheene de cided it wa s tim e to mo ve o n, an d swe p t p ast the It alian. Read over too k h im too , but the It alian 's race was sh ort lived for the Su zuki seized, and he re tired to the jeers an d catcalIs of h is fiekJe fans. The Re ad /Sh eene battle was superb , though, an d t he crowd turned th eir atte ntio n to that in ste ad of Ago baitin g. Sheene let Read through, but he mad e a mis take when a tailender slo wed him by more th an three seconds on one lap letting Read move o u t of reach . Barry had to wo rk hard to cl ose the gap , an d the pair were together for the final lap .
