Satur day night MX is something
• else at Motorcycle Raceways. With
their newly widened track and
additional fences up, it's easy to
see why more and more motocrossers
are turning out for the Saturday ni gh t
races.
Although it turned out a bit chilly
towards the end of the first motos, it
didn 't keep the ra ces from being
exciting. Trey Jorski went on to win all
three Expert ra ces with Bobby
McDaniels (Bul) giving h im a little he at
in the 250 Expert race. Powder Puffer

The Open No vice race had its bit of
excitement when in the fir st moto
Chuck Foster (Mai) and Mike Slo ver
(Yam) were runnin g ne ck an d neck for
first pla ce when Fo ster passed Slo ver
right before the chec kered. In moto t wo
Foster was leading when his pipe broke
loose leaving two more laps to go.
Slover soon caug h t up and passed Foster
to go on and win the race.
In the Open Am ateur ra ce Pete
Doonkeen (CZ) and Ronnie Schweitzer
(Su z) battled it out for first in the firs t
moto, with Doonkeen t aking th e
checkered flag . In the second moto
Doonkeen and Bob Benninght (CZ)
stalled their -en gines on the first tum
giving Schwitzer a good head start.
Schweitzer went on to win with
Doonk.een co m ing in second.

alive at 1:00 p.m. Sun day as 250
cycles roare d into life to kick off
the Fifth Annual Bartley Grand
Pri x. When th e smo ke an d dust had
cleared, Rich Dostal o f Longmont,
Colorado had ridde n his 25 0 Bultaco to
his second co nsecutive overall win of ,
the Bartley bash. Dostal co mp let ed the
eight 14 mile laps in just ov er three
hours. Close o n Dos tal's heels was
overall runner up Bob Prussman of Ft .
Collins, Open clas s winner on a Husky.
Nebraskans Rod Van Vleet (Su z) of
McCook and Dave Hunt (Yam ) of
Lexington made a " local" ra ce of the
100 class event with VanVleet in the
number one spot and - Hunt in hot
pursuit, no t far behind.
Randy Johnson , also of McCook,
wa lked off with top honors in the 125
class, his Su zuki leading the field.
Yamaha pilots Jim Conroy o f Indianola,
Nebraska and Coloradoan John Pharris
took the next spots wi th Colby , Kansas
rider Ge rald Hau ser (Ho n ) fourth.
Bill Neilso n o f No rfolk , Nebraska
and Dave Scherschlight of Green River,
Wyoming battled for the 200 class win
o n Yamahas with Ne ilsen ending up on
to p . The top three spots in this race
were tak en by the " magical m ach ines"
with a Suzuki fillin g out th e top four.
Just as the 200 class was a Yama ha
event, the 250 clas s bout was definitely
Husk y co untry . Dudly Biddly of
Loveland took top honors in th e 250
clas h , with Colorado rid ers Wayne
Strum and Bart Kellogg numbers two
an d t hr ee; all on Huskies. Kevin Bud ke
of McCo ok grabbe d fourth on his
Ho nd a to avoi d to t al Husky domin at ion
o f the eve n t.
The most hotly co n te nded race of
t he race took plac e in th e Open class
with Prussm an on a Husky and Yamah a
rid er Bo b Osthoff o f Castl e Ro ck ,
Colo rad o go ing at it nip and tuck all
day. When the checkered flag fin ally fe ll
it was Prussman in the lead with Osthoff
just minutes behind. The visitors fro m
th e Ro ck y Mountain -St ate made this
th eir event, taking nine of th e first 13
places including one through six.
Rain, the we ek prior to t he ra ce ,
coupled with a clear sunny day on
Sun d ay combined to provide an
excellen t riding surface at race time.
R a c emaster Del Harsh used the
challen ging Nebraska terrain to its top
poten tia l and an in teresting ra ce for
both spectators and co mpe tito rs alike
was th e result. Spills and pile ups did, of
course tak e place, however, major
acci d en ts were few and only two major
injuries (a broken leg an d a broken
co llar bo ne) took place. Some o f the
machines, ho wever, did not fare so well
an d not all of the 250 starters
completed the 112 mile total.

J orski had a perfect score after a night
o f mo to cross not to men tion a
pocketful of money .
Trey started th e fir st 125 Expert
moto by gra bbing th e lead whe n th e
ga te fell and wasn 't bothered all moto,
He was fo llowed closely by Harry
Nickell but was just goi ng too fas t fo r
Nic kell to keep th e pace up. Nickell
hel d sec ond to the end o f the mo to ,
Glen Sn edecker and St eve Willard filled
third and fourth posit io ns followe d by a
du el that co nsisted of David Newby and
Kelly Su llivan . Sullivan came o ut o n top
and p assed Willard. Sullivan 's bike
seized which dropped him o u t fo r a lap .
In the second moto J orsk i gasse d and
no one ever saw him again . Newby and
Nic ke ll filled out second an d third
pl aces, Jimmie Hill finished up fo ur t h
place.
When the gate flopped for the 25 0s,
T rey Jorski shot into th e lead and
st ormed to a hundred yard lead on the
first lap. Newby was in second but
dropped back with troubles letting
Bubber Smith, Jimmie Hill and Chris
Cunningham ge t by. Newby final ly got
it sorted out and sneaked bac k past
Cunningham and Hill. Smith overshot a
tr icky hairpin tum lo sin g three p laces.
The final order was Jorski, David
Newb y, Jimm ie Hill, and Chris
Cunningh am.
The se cond moto of th e 25 0s looked
like an instant replay of th e first m oto
. as Jo rsk i shot to the lead. Af ter much
sh u ffl ing of positions behind him the
checker ed flag saw Bubber Sm ith take
se cond fo llowed by David Newby,
J immie Hill and J im Thomas .
