Salinas smooth scrambles By Burt Dinne r SALINAS, CAL., MA Y 2 The first sm ooth scrambles of the year had a good turnout of both big - bikes and mini-bikes. Buddy ' Robinson (Yam) made his first Salin as s tar t a winning effort, outdistancing Fred Bennett (Yam) in the Open Expert class. In the bigges t class of the day, Paul Iwanaga (Suz) edged out Keith Day (Yam) and Norm an Combs (Suz ). Doug Chandler was the only double winner, taking both the Expert 80 modified and the 100 class. • Robinson , and 'Looney' at S.J. Speedway opener By W. H. In the Pro class first moto CMC Northwest No. Two Monty Mit chell w as doing co mbat with Kevin Meye rs, staying just a wheel ahe ad of Kevin , most of the time. Kevin, hanging in with about five minutes to go, go t by Monty 's KTM when Monty did a little mis cu e in a barrel tum . With th e on e lap flag up , less than a lap to go, Kevin's Yamaha decided to spit off its ch ain, tear up his rear sprocket and break his case. Kevin said, " I wa s really havin g fun, but this will co st m e what I earn ed at Fox Holl ow last Sunday ."
