AME:Team GrandPrix By Ted Titmas VALENCIA, CAL., APRIL 25 Aiming to please their riders, AME offered over $3000 in contingencies to its sportsmen classes and a large payback to the Pros. Helmet House and Cycle Products West donated most of the prizes. The format for the second annual Grand Prix was for two-man teams to race a co mb in ation desert motocross course overthree miles long. Pit stops were mandatory, providing entire families the opportunity to participate ,alo ng with the riders as they entered the pits for refueling and changing of required armbands. I Generating most of the excitement were the 125, 250, and the 500 Pro classes combined. The track seemed to favor the Open bikes but anything the I 125s lacked in speed, the riders made up t for in talent. Will Harper (Mai) made his , start by grabbing the holeshot, followed by Mike ' Smith "(Sue) and Mark Gambetta (Hon). Things stayed pretty much , the same throughout the race, with a few exceptions. Rick Salmon made a brief appearance in fourth place, ' up from dead last, until poor pit stops and a slower teammate dropped them back down . Again when Salmon (Mai) ~ took over, he moved right back up to third. Mark Gambetta had been holding down third overall for most of the race when he turned over the duty to Warren Reed (Hon) who began closing in on Haugh (Mai). First to be passed was Smith for second. It was amazing to watch Reed on the motocross section where he was obviously much quicker. With only ten minutes left in the moto Reed was no fewer than five bike lengths behind when he crashed, los ing an y hopes of first overall. But he had such a large lead over the rest of the .ders that he was able to finish third overall and first in class giving , Haugh time to switch with Harper to fin ish . first overall and a few hundred dollars richer. • I ', Rainey ramjets to Corona wins I By Elaine Jones CO RONA, CAL. , MAY 12 [ Shirt sleeve weather, a fast track and plenty of riders provided some exciting racing and a rash of double winners, including Wayne Rainey who ' collected the lion's share in , both the money races. In the short track money race it was fast' Eddie Lawson off on top with Tidwell second and Rainey third. Wayne moved into second on lap two an d I finally his break came on lap seven when Eddie went out with attrition problems. On the half-mile Wayne was up against another Ascot Novice who's been making some big waves . Tim ' I McWhorter, and his Butch Silva tuned ~ Yamaha, didn 't miss a lick in the 15 lap main and Rainey had to sett le for \ I second, which isn't too shabby for the , , 250cc mounted youngster. Wayne also co llec ted wins in both the 250 Expert short track and half- mile, topping Mike Tidwell and Mike Minn ig on the short trac k with a battle that saw some spectacular riding on both Wayne and Mike 's part. Tim McWhorter add ed the Open Expert half-mile to his laurels, far ' outdistancing Vern Maxwell and Don Driggs. Tidwell kept his win record alive with wins in both the 125 Expert short track and half-mile. Danny Perkins is still the heir apparent as he ran secon d in both. Eddy San Roman forgot to turn the gas on in the 250 Expert Twin sem i but put everything together for the main an d had no problem taking the win from Stan Kinsey and J im Davission. . Freddy Conover has become the Open Amateur to watch as he repeated his double win from las t week, topping Terry Traver and Dan Driggs on the half-mile . Dan pulled a real cute number as he ran into trouble coming out of turn two and exercised a bit of motocrossing, which isn't exactly a , 650cc 's forte , but he didn 't lose it . St an Kinsey fell to Freddy 's C. H. Kawasaki on the short track. Dave Lazuruk, out for the first time on a Fred Arnold tuned Honda, won't be a Novice for long. He won the Open Novice over Joe Flores and Pat McCann on both the short tr ack and half-mile. Sieve Polson and Mike Paulson were the big -winners of the 125 Novice short track and half-m ile . Steve was first in each .and Mike was second. No one ruled the 250 Novice divisions. Jeff Wise, Jim Beck and Bob Kivrizis dueled for the win, show and place spots on the short track and Chris Cboisser, Leroy Nozois and Jeff Wise the half-m ile. • Sure Fire No. 2 ' Racing Oil PetrolE~um base mixes easily with gasoline and stays mixed . doesn 't Choisser & Douglas double trouble at Elsinore bur n , stops sm oking, f or pre-mixing or inj ector . By And i Gangewer , ELSINORE, CAL., MAY 8 Lane Steeber won a well deserved trophy Saturday night in the Open Novice class as he worked through his heat race; a semi and the main event. I5-year-old Lane was hot, and rode like a pro to take the gold in the main as Richard Bishop slipped past Terry Williams for second. Orlando Lamboy, the first heat winner, had to settle for third. ' Scott Douglas and Chris Choisser won two classes which meant double trouble for the other riders. Eddie Beeson flew off the jump and swept by Choisser for an easy win the firs t go 'round and Larry Bird passed him on the final lap to pluck away his seco nd. , Larry was only ou t for a joy ride and Chris was awarded the second place points. Brad ' Wooten was third. Chris used his st arting position out in front of the Experts to his best advantage , stormed out front and took the win, followed by Dorothy Rowe. Wooten was third behind the " Sassy Lassie ." Moto three and the 250 Amateur/Expert trophy belonged to Choisser, Beeson didn't join the group for the last two motos so only three riders 'ran the final races. Dorothy was second aga in, then came Wooten. Choisser really poured . it on in the second go 'round. Wooten's Bultaco got by John Steeber for second and Hedstrom was fourth. Wooten 's Bul was hot th e last mot o as he took the checkered aw ay from Chris. Hedstrom was third this time and Steeber didn 't finish the last moto.. At the trophy presentation Choisser picked up his two 'well deserved trophies. Scott Douglas was the victor in bo th the 250 and Special Nov ice classes. Six riders went on to the main from the semi and after a long rest Douglas was ready and willing for a shot at the main. He was off like a rocket to capture the lead, holding Rob Selvey and his Yammie to a second, and both riders picked up trophies. Three different riders had the honor of taking a first in ' each moto of the Special Novice race . Moto one went to Douglas but the ne xt two motos he had to settle for second behind Norman Francis and Rob Selvy. Overall Scott had the point lead by just one measley point over Rob Selvy, who was just one point in front of Norman Fra ncis for second. • Sure Fire 6 Port Reed Valve One Way Compression Release Sur e Fire STILL has the fastest servi ce ar oundl , Call T oll FREE 800/438 -5821 (in N.C . call 704/255-8096) DEALE : CALL OR.R'T£JCNI AU COlOR CAJALIK.
