Gaston has sponsored two Belgian proteges to so me GPs this y ear - Gerar d Carnal and Diendonne Stoevenakers, Stoeven akers kept moving up steadily from a poor start, riding a . very controlled race. Hans Strobenreuter, on a semi-works KTM, was also turning in a consistent, rapid ride from a poor start. Velky's rear brake broke; then his frame cracked above the swingann pivot. He was not passed, even as Smith held him off to take third at the finish and Gaston lapped all the riders up to Velky. The CZS make a lot of horsepower, high in the rev range, but that combined with their 178 lb . dry weight, m akes them a double Russian handful to ride. Pa~el Ru lev (CZ) got u p fro m his second lap crash to ma ke a determ ined charge through the strung-o u t riders to finis h fif th. He is very determin ed, Rulev apparently wasn 't w orn out by h is catch-up ri de on the third-fas test wo r ks CZ. Fo r the second moto , he b lew o ut of the day-glo orange start gate first . Gast on Rahier went inside on the R A 76 divin g in to the green-tunneled fir st tum, came o ut ahead of Rul ev and after that, t here was o nly to watch an incredible display of mo tocross virtuosity. Marty Smith had started w ell, then drop ped about eig ht positions on the second lap when he p itted. The co mplain t was the same as in the first m o t o [towards the end) . The Ho nda's airbox was all owing the fine silt o f the Hawkstone Park course past t he re ed valve into the Ho nda's very pri cey engine. The bike ran poorly for the first half of the moto. Marty was frustrated but, much to his credit, ke pt trying. _ Gas ton kept trying, too. So much so that he had a 16 sec ond lead on J iri Ch u ravy after six laps. The yo ung, red-h eaded Czech had gotten p ast Rulev and Englishman Harvey had moved past, also into fo urth. . There were personal battles develop ing in mid-pack eve n as Gast o n wheelied away with the race. Tommy Olssori, a Swede riding for the Ancilotti factory, wa s going at it with Dar io Nani, an Italian rid ing fo r the Gilera works. The mter-Itanan oarue carried them past privateer Pera lma, still be rserking his way around o n the on ly Ya maha in the GP . Olsson and Nani carried their race past Harvey. S t r o b e nre u t e r ( KTM) and Stoevenakers (Suz) were engaged in the same kin d of catch-up, wheel under wheel racing. American Mar ty Smith was behind them all, involved in the business of making up half a lap . Smith co ntinued very steadily, eating away the yards until he was ninth wi th two laps to go . . Into the sandpit, Gaston smiled and did a little c1ickshot for the American t photographer. Over the finish line jump, . he waggled his air forks th ree times : before hitting the ground and taking the flag - making it a to tal of four wins and • two seconds in six GP motos. It was his day. Other riders, Churavy and Smith, had finished ahead of him before under other co nd it io ns. Today, in England, Rahier was unbeatabl e and the selection r o f cy lin der, pipe and gearing for the Suzuki was spot on . Go Mart y Smith passed Stoevenakers in " t he whoop-dee-does on the last lap to " fin ish seventh, which gave him fourth overall for the day . "I'm just here for fl the experience," he said . "Checkin ' ~ t h in gs out. I'm tryin' but I'm not t supp osed to win." • I t , , Results F I R ST M OTQ: 1. Gaston Rahier ( Suzl 1 Bel g. 2. Jirl Ch u ra vy (CZ) 'C SS R . 3.
