lin e Gerrit Wol sink bolted his Suzuki in to the lead as th e ga te slammed do wn for the first ra ce with Roger DeCoster , Graham No yce, Ake Jonsson , and Arne . Lindfors right after him . Lackey wa s down in twelfth . Pierre Karsmakers n ever made it away from the start as his Honda loaded up and would not clear. Before the start he had t ried turning off th e gas , an d it cleared a lit tle but as soon as he turned the petco ck on again it blubbered . Steve rushed it back to th e pits and put in a col der plug. He also thought th at mayb e the ignition was off but he left it and the new plug proved to be the answer. With no chan ce of earning an y GP points, he w ent out and made six laps to make sure t he b ike was spot on. The only problem Was that he pulled in behind Roger and raced with him wh ich was unnecessary and also dangerous had he crashed and taken Roger with him . Roger closed the gap on Gerri t, and ab o u t ten minutes into th e race he got ahead of h im as Gerrit swept to the ou tside o f a tum and Rog er darted to th e inside and got away . . Schmit z was in third with Graham , Brad an d Ake right behind. Schmitz's Pu ch threatened to seize and he slowed do wn and let Noyce ahead of him . Noy ce put o n a sprint th at had him all alone for mos t of th e race as Brad tried to g et p a s t S chmi tz . Brad go t by Schmi tz but was slowed down in his effort to get by No yce when a rock too k o ut p art of his lens an d it st arted filling wi th dirt sprayed by · Noyce. The dir t bounced up and down insi de his goggl es and blurred h is visio n . Brad closed up on Noyce but co u ldn ' t get by an d finis hed the race only five ten th s of a seco nd behind the factory Maico pilot fro m Engl and. Ther e were no support clas ses only the tw o GP ra ces. The ri d ers h ad on ly forty -five minutes res t be fore the final race of th e day. Pier re was definitely th e freshest and h is bike th e least worn. When th e gate dropped Pier re got his Honda o ff th e line quickest an d led th e rac e from start to finish. The rac e for second pl ace was a duel bet w een t w o Bel gian s, J aak van Velthov an and Roger Defl oster, Roger stayed on J aak's rear wheel, and th e tw o . were racing Oat o u t until Jaak was fo rced to retire o n the next to last lap when th e KTM's head gaske t bl ew o ut. Noyce wa s also with the lead ers when he retired with a broken head stay , blown base gas ke t an d ruptured cases . Ro ger co uld n't close th e ga p on Pier re and h e sai d afte r th e race tha t his Suz u ki kept jump ing out of third gea r. S chm it z went o u t w i th en gin e ove rh ea ting problems after ten laps. Brad's second race effo rt netted him sec o nd o ver all fo r the day and h is highest fin ish eve r in GP comp etitio n. Startin g o ut in eigh th he worked his way up p as t Jonsson an d th en became locked in a three way battle with Bauer and Khoudiakov (C Z) as they rode lin ked toge ther fo r most o f th e latter p art of th e rac e. On th e ne xt to last lap Brad nudged p ast the Russian an d started closing in on Baue r as they exited the las t right-hander fo r th e uphill to the start fini sh . Brad go t along side of Willi and, with both of th em wide open, they cro ssed the finish line with Brad just h alf a wheel and eigh t ten ths of a second beh ind. Weil ' s s eco nd race third placing co m b ined wi th hi s seventh in the firs t race n etted him third overall for the da y and kep t him in sec ond place for the World Championsh ip beh ind Gerrit , with only five points separating them.
