After negotiating uns uccessfu lly with AMA over a pilot program to revitalize weekly AMA pro racing at the venerable oval, Ascot promoter J .C. Agajanian an nounced that beginning Friday, May 2 I, the weekly pro series will be run under Continental Motosports Club (CMC) sanction. At :this writing, th e change is not expected to affect the scheduled runni ng of Ascot 's two Cam el Pro Series AMA Nationals - the August 7 TT and the October 9 half m ile under the AMA tent. Aggie, on Ap ril 30, had written District Referee Chu b b Kellam a 10-p o int pi lot program proposal to pass on to AMA in Westerville. ' The impasse developed over the promoter's request to use a portion of the back-gate money (rider and m echanic's entry fees) to purchase. his own insu ran ce package, rather than the AMA 's contractually-req uired "standard" pro insurance. . . Other key points in the proposal, which apparently wo uld have been acceptable : I) There would be three mains and a trophy dash' regardless of entry. A short Expert entry would be fiIled by seeding the fastest-qualifying JW1iors, in w hatever n umber necessary to guarantee a fuIl 15-man feature Main, into the Expert p rogram. The remaining Juniors would run their own class pr0l!'"am. • 2) The main event purse would be distributed as an Expert purse in a "standard" program. JW1ior and Novice purses would m ain tain at current percentage levels. Juniors would earn advan ce ment points regardless of which pro~ram they ran in . . . 3) Th e promoter would have been allowed to determine jointly with the referee the number, duties , and compensation of race officials. . Now, with no agreement between promoter and AMA o n the full pro p osal , a CMC program will be run instead, with two divisions - ·an Expert Divisio n for current AMA JW1iors and Experts on 750s, and a Novice Division co m pa t ible with current AMA Nov ices. Skip Van Leeuwen and Sammy Tanner will aid in planning the details of the weekly Cl\IC shows . The Cl\IC insuran ce program benefits au t o m at ically accrue to any CMC·licensed rider. These include a $5,000 de ath benefit; a $IOO-deductible medica l benefit that will p ay 100% of all hospital, surgical and doctor bills over $ 10 0 and up to a $5 ,0 0 0 limit; and a 26 'week, $40 per week unemployment co m pensa t io n that begin s th e second week of disability du e to an acciden t, Although a CMC number w ill be issu e each licensee' for registration purposes, riders m ay co mpe te with thei r AMA numbers on their motorcycles.
