" 125 Novice Mike Scarborough (482) w~apped up his first Mosier Valley MX Park win. , . Corte, Roberts ~ t op 125ers ,c D Di f) n , By Dave Nielsen ,, ARLINGTON, TEX., APRIL 4 As usual, the bulk of the 'action at .Mosier Valley MX Park was in the 125cc classes, with a lot of speed and a little luck required to place in any of them. Requisite quickness due to the state of competition, and luck to beat bulging classes; Not to mention those intangible instincts that keep these screamers between the fences while WFO around this well-groomed, highly demanding layout. Most of the riders just say it's "neat." Second moto upsets were the order of both 125 Novice divisions. Suzuki jammers Andy Prior and Jimmy Jones flew to first and second in the openin~ round after Martin Talbot (Bul) disappeared halfway through, but Jones took the final moto all the way over Prior. David Donaldson (Hon) was looking for his third win for a five -race Mosier letter jacket, but after smoking moto one in Division II, took a slow start, and Mike Scarbrough (Yam) ran off with first overall at 2-1 over Donaldson's 1-3. The tempo really picked up in 125 Intermediate, as the David Jones-David DiCorte rivalry continued to highlight today's 28 rider field. Jones' Honda and DiCorte 's Yammer rubbed axles back and forth throughout the first moto , with Dennis Goodson (Suz) and Bruce Hallmark (Hon) holding third and fourth, until DiCorte took the flag, getting by Jones on the last lap. Round two saw Jones and Kirk Spencer (Yam) jumping the pack; but Jones promptly crashed, fell again and was out of it. DiCorte quickly too k over from a fourth -plac e sta rt an d buzzed in the winner, while Spencer's strong second moved into fourth OA at 7-2 behind Goodson (3 -3) and Hallmark rum (4-4). . Cajun Ricky Madole pumped his Hen da so hard in the 125 Expert race that it blew a gasket, and turned what would have been his third straight win at Mosier into disintegration on the first heat's final lap . Madole started looking over his shoulder with about three laps to go and his top end going away with his comfortable lead. After the white flag, Ricky's Elsie finally quit, making a close race for second into a dash to the checkers for Eddie Roberts, Ruben Alonzo, Mark Pledger, and Mike Martin. Texarkana's Randy Frakes (Yam) surprised all present with a start-to-finish win in the second moto after his unnoticed sixth in round one. Positions swapped freely behind him, and Roberts (Yam) ended low point man at 1-3 for first OA over Martin (Yam, 4-2), while Frakes jumped into third, Alonzo (Hon, 2-5) fourth, and Pledger slipped out with a last moto nintlf', • Farley splashes e American Federation .---- to Austin win By Greg Lal:!be AUSTIN, TEX., APRIL 4 The rains held off just long enough for the Amateurs to finish their motos early in the afternoon, but the Experts couldn't 'quite escape the wrath of Mother Nature. Halfway into the 250 Expert event, the sky, wh ich had been threatening all day, opened up and proceeded to wash t he traction o u t from underneath the knobs of a field of 55 exceedingly fast Experts. Needless to say, it soon be came slip-an d-slide cit y. The day started with" Scott Elliott finding his way to the front of the pack in each moto with stiff competition from Mike West. Unfortunately, Mike crashed ·his Yamaha in both m otos and had to settle for fourth ove rall. Bill Davis came back after a long layoff for second Open J unior followed by .Stacy Howle, who has mo ved b ack do wn fro m the Expert ranks, in third. Kyle Landrum led both Mini Senior motos but was o verh au led each time by mini-master Frank Tello . Terry Curtis smoked the IOOs in the first moto but couldn't do it twice, ending up third overall. Dicky Tillman was first and Jack Beckham seco n d. The 125 Novices were divided in half, Division A going to Chris Shard, and· Dvision B being won by Dean Waskobiak. - In the Expert division, Scott Boughan from Odessa was the rider to watch today. Though he didn't win either of the two classes that he rode, this was Scott's first ride after having fractured his back here five months ago. The layoff seemed to be of little consequence since Scott stuck his Suzukis into the thick of things all day long. At the finish he was third overall 250 and second overall Open. Not a bad come back. Boughan and Roger Brown had a tremendous battle in the Open class behind the Husky mounted Dan Farley. Today was the factory-sponsored Farley's day as he won both the 250 and Open class with a convincing four moto sweep of first place. Roger Brown ended '!p third Open and second 250 on his Perrin Cycles sponsored Can-Am. Dicky Nowell came down from Ft. Worth and rode his new KTM to fourth ahead of San Antonian Kevin Horton on a Husky . The 250 class was rounded out by two Houston . riders, Can-Am mounted David Taylor and Yamaha ace Glen Urquhart riding fo r Humble Yamaha. • (Contin ued on page 44) American PJ Co. Ancra Corp.
