Gary, riding Expert division, never relinquished his lead as he cut seven mi nutes off of the winning time fro m the preceeding month's race. Rick Corbin had to flog his 340 Rokon against some stiff but erratic competition in the early going bu t outlasted them, fmishing overall Amateur in second position. Mac McKinley rode his Austin Sportcycles tuned Husky 125 to second Expert with Tom Robinson on a 360 Husky in third. David Cooper on a Yamaha was first 250-Open, Gardner Ayref was second on a Husky, John Shoemaker rode an MT-250 Ho nda 10 third, Bob Edrington was fo urth on his 340 Rokon and Mike I" Bryant was fifth on Yamaha. 125 honors went to David Piepenbrok on a Ca n-Am, with George Lloy d on a Penton in second. A free beer awaited each finisher and after three hours of heated competition, it was an ap p reciated ad d ition t o the day's festivi ties. Everyone see me d to e njoy thems el ves although th ere were a few dejected no n-finishers. A couple of t o d die s and so me good race lies soon had them ready for the nex t even t, however. • I I I ..1 CARTER 'S YAMAHA BMW · Can-A m Comp lete la rt s & se rvice Dy no - Po rt i n g - M ach in e Sh o p F a st M ail O rd e r 214-241-9135 13 8 6 0 N . Not only does it offer the Ex pert a chance to unlimber his or her bike fro m th e long win te r 's nap, but it does a m o re important thing. It allows the Novice and the family to give it a try without disco uraging the m with a toug h course righ t off t he bat. Earl Ha rris, o f Fort Lupton, was one such example . No t only was this Earl's firs t ever e nduro , bUI he had t he dubious distincti on of being firs t off the line . He finis hed o n ti me but sai d that he 'd had a few pr o blems in between he got lost a t one point and was runnin g around lo ose in a small town u n til he retraced hi s ro u t e and fo und the nex t check. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lehl ra n the event on their Yamahas just for the fun of it while their two daughters waited with fingers crossed at the finish line. Mrs. Lchl started out one minute ahead of her husband and ca me in abou I ten minutes behind him. She said she got lost and never did make it to the ba ck section of the course. She had a big grin and said she was just plain happy to be back. Don Bergener, on his 125 Yamaha. managed to take a first place trophy even though he'd missed a turn and h ad gotten lost for a short lime. _ Rainy Rio Bravo racing By L. J . Oupl ichan HOUSTON, TEX., APRIL 18 Easter eggs, motorcycles, and eight inches of rain in the area were the order of the day at Rio Bravo on Easter Sun day. A large n umber o f enthusiastic riders were no t hampered by the holiday or the weather an d turned up ready to race. Showers started abo ut mid morning, b ut a full first heal was run in every class an d then the cash and trophies were awarded on first m oto resul ts. Those fellows in the m ud encrusted leathers t u rned out to be t he 125 A Division and the inner wa s Eddie Thomas just ahead of Doug Cooper and Brad Haskins. When the water hose cleared the mud on the B class , it was Greg Thurmond in the lead with Ryan Kirkpatrick and Don Harrington trailing, The 125 Intermediates and the Open Amateurs started within 30 seconds of one another and it was so me kind of wild. Open bikes and 125s alike were bogged to t he hubs, but Tom Curry got through to claim number one in the 125 Intermediate division and Scott Stevens made it through fo r a second place finish followed by Scott Smith, Mike Contello, and Randy Adams. The fellows on the big bore machines were not to be outdone and Bill Davis took his Mo noshock Yamaha aro und for a fine ride to claim first among the ju mbo Amateurs. Gas Mart's Jerry Darnell with his new p urple tank Husky was the runn er up followed by Ro bert Rubel , Jerry Wegmann, an d Dup Duplich an. In the 125 Expert di vision, th e lead changed hands several times wi th Mickey Pizz a tol a gelling t he ho leshot, b u t experiencing difficult ies and falling back. Hard riding Bo Ko ch slushe d his way thro ug h the debris of bikes and riders and Came ou t on top for first place money trailed by Robert Cereal, Glenn Urquhart, a nd Brian Dougan. Mike Wha r lon made it look easy in the 25 0 Expert class and poured it on for an undisputed first place victory. Brian Schafer was next in line at the cash box followed by Roger Brown and G lenn Urquhart. _
