WO RTH, TEX., AP RIL 9 Believe it o r n o t , friends, there was a legiti mate p ro short track on the tiny Will Rogers Bam dirt oval" bu t mos t o f th e crowd 's attentio n went to th e touring pro skidders, in town for the fo llowing n ight 's Nation al at Texas Stadi u m. Af ter the fir st ' rounds of he ats in the Novic e /j unior program, no less than Han k Sc ott, Mike Kidd, Mike Caves , j am es Rawls , Guy Mc Clure, an d j ay Springsteen appeared o n X R 75s to battle fo r the d ubio us title of Mini TT Champion of the Universe. With all seriousness obviously aside , race officials Kenny Roberts, Gary Scott, and Rick Hocking took to t he infield to supervise the co mpetition , and as Robe rts flip ped the green , they all fell over without mo vin g an inch, probably to avoid a crowded first com er. With fiery determination , Kidd roared by early leader Mike Caves after many crash-filled laps (the owners of the minibikes sweating all the while), and wen t on to lead the pack to victory, but was disqualified for stopping in the corners. The rest were kicked out for disobeying the blue nag, riding double, cutting the course, hay bale throwing, and various other offenses. Roberts was last seen heading out the back door with the trophy and its foxy presenter, claiming the win due to attrition, while announcer jack Rhodes and promoter Don Kidd tried to po ll the crowd's ap plause to determine a winner. Meanwhile, back at t he real races, the field was n arrowing down in the fou r Semis , with Mik e Green, Ru st y Patillo , Luc ky Nich o ls, and Andy West earning fro nt ro w slots for the Main, and be st shots for bi gger pieces of the $9 00 purse. Green and his Les St ultz tuned Bul, along with Patillo, ab oar d a St ubb lefie ld Honda 350 th umper, had looked the be st in all the prelim s, and when the Main got going so did Gre en . He got a slight j um p and gra du ally pull ed away for a co m fortable win, while Patillo was a solid second, and a battle fo r third went t o Andy West (Bul) o ver Nicho ls and O kie Darrell Pittman.
