Rockyhill Night IT By Cosmic Cat & CO. PORTERVILLE, CA L., APRIL 17 District 35 scrambles re turned under the lights tonight at th e Rockyhill Speedway in Port erville. Turnout was 'good and the riders were su rp rised in fi nding a rather tac ky track in stead o f the usual slick surface Rockyhill is asso ciated with . Chad Bettencourt (Ya m ) held off all corners in the Novice main to t ak e top honors over fellow Yarnaha'ers, Nic k Del Rio and Tim Patton. Patton was in the second slot behind Bettencourt at the start but halfway through the main, Del Rio put th e bite on Patton for second and sta rt ed closing in on Bettencourt the final lap and a half. Del Rio 'co uld n 't make up the distance in time and h ad to be content with second while Patton finished third. Robert Land (Yam) rode an impressive race to take the top trophy in the Mini Juniors over Vic Williamson • and Kurtis Wilder (Su z) . (Lo o ks lik e little Land may be following in big brother Derek 's footsteps.) entering the sw eeper A crash i~volving leaders James Crisp (Su z ) and The Cantal oupe Kid took th e hole sho t in the first mota and Ro y Seiler (Ha n) pulled out of the p ack , taking ove r se co nd before a shock bro ke. Meanwh ile Robert No rto n (Ha n), who had been rig ht on Seiler, too k over - se cond under pressure from Mike Pre ston (Nag) . Preston and No rton battled at every tum, staying close and swa p ping slots. Pres ton ended up with . the sec ond for the rna to. Norto n took the lead for a couple of laps o f the secon d .....mo to before Can taloupi fo und th e opening he neede d to ge t by. Then it was Norton an d Pres ton dicing for ' second again! Th e spotlight was o n t hem un til Preston lost con trol o n a be rm an d bit the dust fo ra DNF. Pat Wilson ha d no tro uble win ning bo th 250 Expert ro un ds, as he led every lap , building a good lead . Mike Hersman and Te d Ro gers , also on Huski es, fell into lin e beh ind Wilson and at times th e racing got pretty ho t between those two. The fini sh order was the same for both mo te s, but in th e second run Hersman had to work harder for his second after a bad start. The Open Expert races were almost re -makes of the 250's with a different cast of ch ara cters. Danny Leet (Mai) led every lap by a long, long way after a quickie fall and remount in the first lap of the first mota. Brad y Farris, on a new Mota Vill a, had also spun ou t, but rec o vered to.run second every lap .
