(714) 735 -7721 ~' Moving from a 125 to 250 for this race, Tom Kelly (KTM) won the Amateur/Expert finale at the DRA California City gpmd Prix. Kelly 's first overall win happily netted him S1000 in cash plus con tingencies. DRA changed from a mass desert start to a row-by-row start, with the event being timed and position adjusted by start row. Kelly started in front, along with Morgan Malo cco (5 00 Yam) who took the early lead. Pre -race favorite Bob Balentine (4 00 KTM) started on the second ro w (15 seconds behind the first] and passed Kelly on the pavement section coming into town to take second.. On the second loop Balentine almost caugh t Malocco only to run out of gas and lose a couple of minutes. Morgan further increased his lead on th e third loop when Balentine lost his rear brake and had to stop for a replacement. On the fourth loop, Malocco was blasting down a fireroad when a van pulled out in front of h im. Morgan skillfully laid it down , and would have slid to a .safe stop , b u t a powder hole caug ht a wheel and flipped him. He arrived bac k in t he pi ts shaken but unhurt. Kelly took over the lea d , wi th Mike Keen (360 Hus) in second, Wayne Garrett (500 Yam) ' in third and Balentine in fourth . On the last loop Balentine patted Garrett, almost got by Keen, and again ran out of gas. Kelly finished the 100-mile race with a two-minute lead. The 250 KTM had been given to him and Jeff Kaplan for the Baja. Friday he saw hit 125 Mono scattered all over the garage, looked at the KTM sitting there ready to go , and figured ••• Keen, who finished second last fall , ' di d it again, and picked up around $450. Balentine finished third, second Ope .... Expert. Garrett finished fourth, just ahead of Daryn Wyatt (360 Hus), the first Amateur. Monte Lee (250 Tim Bowman b111S1S through the Cal City bushes in usual fine form.
