WASH. , AP R IL 4 Kenny New (Yam) started out th e day with wha t look ed like a clear Mini runaway bu t saw his hop es vanish when his engine exploded on the four th lap . T hi s gave T roy Sawyer (Yam ) a huge lead which he never lost. Kevin Bixby (Y am) followed fo r second with Ron Law fa r ba ck in third on hi s trusty Honda. T hey fin ish ed in th e sam e orde r in th e second moto with Sawye r lapping riders all th e way up to second pl ace. Two 125 q ualifie rs we re ru n wi th t he faster riders m o vin g to the A cla ss for the final mota. In the first qu ali fier. Yamaha m o u n ted Crai g Sawy e r (riding a 10 0) and Marl in Schumake r of the T ri-Cities pil oted thei r m o unts to t he fron t of th e class. T om Hilker (Ya m) and Bo b Fron tis (Suz) also transferr ed. At th e start of the second qualifier, Sandy J aquish (Yam) got his usual holeshot with Ed Livezey (Han) following closely in second. After th ree laps, Ed ma de h is move on the very rou gh uph ill. Don Pe terson moved u p to challenge J aq ui sh ncar the end of the mota. b u t the two Yamaha ride rs were t oo equally ma t ched and Peterson garn er ed a third . AItho ug h t he Yamahas arc taking over th e 125A class, t he Elsin ores still d ominate the 125B class. J ohn Fag en (Ha n) easily bl asted to a lead which was never challe nged after Mar k Kreuger (Han) fe ll on th e start. Mark was able to work his way up t o second with good , co nsi ste n t truc king. . Walt Morrison real ly put th e power t o the groun d on hi s big green Kawasaki to extend his Open class winning streak. John Stewart (Ya m) had all he co uld handle in holding off t he charges of Glen Clifford (Ka w ) bu t e m erge d with a well earned sec o nd. • Re sul ts in Results Sec tio n. A banner suspended between the Bice ntennial Buzzards was drop pe d fro m a ho t ai r balloon. Dave Newell proved that a 125 can wo rk just fmc by winning his class and p u ttin g in a fine o verall fin ish at eighth. Warren Hickman p ro b ably rode his way rig ht out of t he Amateur class by rolling in sitting in fi f th ove ra ll. All arou nd nice guy Bob Stro bel ca me over fr om Oreg o n and motored a round for a fo u rth, wh ile S teve Gerber fill ed in for inj u re d bro t her Pres to n with first 250 an d third ove ra ll. Big Piney , Wyoming sent t he fa mo us Gu io family o ver for a race an d Colton wound up secon d. His dad, Ken (in 10 th overall!) was th e wi nner of the "J ac k Benny Cla ss" over Senior cycl ist s Bill Pharness and " t he be arded buzzard" hi sself . . . Herby Uh l. His gas went away in both ends somewhere o n the first loop. Not the kind to give up without a fight . Lynn pe rsisted and set o u t for th e second loop only to stall on o ne of the uphills whe re a fellow entrant blasted by and snagged his throttle cable . Wh ile - trying to get his machine po in ted back u p the hill and going again. Lyn n was cut off fro m t he trail and bounced back do wn a ways, scarfing h is cl u tch lever.
