Then on lap four, Reeves got off line in the scoring tower ess tum , saving it but taking Newman '5 front wheel in the pro cess. Lap six saw Reeves go ahea d to stay , holding off Presley and Dos s a t the flag. Newman ret urn ed to ch arge by Presley in the final, but Louis kept a cool head to take the overall, as Reeves got a poo r start, and Doss was out of action. Reeves m oved t hr ou gh the fiel d in to fo urth , which wo ul d h ave secu red sec ond OA , bu t on the las t lap became an other victim o f Whitney 's infamous h osp ital swee per, going h igh off his sideways Honda . With three of th e first round's top' four out of it , Eddie Walker ' (Ya m ) moved into second overall at 5-5 , ahead of Glen J ohnson (Ho n , 9-3). Ed die Ro be rts ( ~ ), and Lar ry Sm ith (Ya m , 7-6 ). Houston riders Jay LeBlanc (C.A) an d Scott Smi th (Hus) we re head ing for victory in th e 25 0 Novice after goi ng 1-2 in the first mo to, bu t p iled up j ust after the start of the fmal in tum th ree , where Reeves had bought it in the 125. Duncanville 's J oe Harrison (Yam) went on to win it with 4- 1 m ar ks , edging Austin Hus ky ride r David Oliver , who was third both times. Wide open at Mosier Valley By Dave Nielsen ARLINGT ON , TEX., MAR. 21 A newly routed, jump.filled trac k greete d over 350 entrants at Mosier Valley MX Park to day, as many who were in to wn for the Texas Stadium MX stayed over and discover ed the true mean ing of WFO . Jay Zea (Ya m ) kicked it off wi th a 3-1 to take Junio r Mini honors over J erry Martin by Derek (Ya m, 1-4) , foll owed Wed d ing's sweep of Senio r Mini. Proving th at old flat tr ackers never die , Leo Schellen berger made a rare ap p earance to upset Vic Doyle in the Over 30 second moto, Putting two thirds together won the 100 Novice class fo r Barry McClish (Yam) , as heat winners Mike Pierce and Skipper Franks ended seco nd and third. During the second moto of the 100, Gary Culpepper of Dallas smacked a tree and w as rushed to t he hospital with a serious head injury. When racing resumed, it was showdown ti me In t he 100 Intermediate, and Mike Hawth orn e had it wo n , bu t got crossways o ver . the last jump, sending hjlJ1_ an~_ his ~uzuki }g to ~ In a tremend o us 34-rider 12 5 Intermediate race , it was tooth and nail all th e way, with David Jones (Ho n, 2-2) edging David DiCorte (Ya m, 1.3) in a tie for the overall first. Dennis Bishop (Ho n) smoked 'em a ll in the second moto, but it ad de d up badly with his DNF in the opener . Always qu ick David Gaunce (Ya m) marked 3-4 to take third, while Light Brown Jr. Lan cione (Hon) went 5-5 over "Zcb" Terrell 's 4-6. Hal Seeker (Kaw) crossed the finish line fir st in b o th 2 50 Intermediate mo tos, but un fo rtunately, didn't start the fi st race from t he starting line, r wh ich is a b asic no-no, Seek er 's dis q ualification m oved Stan Cross (Bul) to first, followed by Sco tt Hudson (Yam, 2-4 ) an d Char les Wiese (Yam, 7-3 ). Cleburne Yamaha's Ken t Sm ith handled th e Op en In term ediate s easily with firs ts in both roun ds, wh ile Richard Davis (3-2) d rove a Husky in to the runner-up slot. Ho us ton flier Sh aun Kelle y (Ho n) holesh ot both mo tos, but each ti me wen t down under e xtre me pressure from such as Richard Reeves, Danny Doss , Louis Presley , Dicky Turnbo, and class winner Ricky Madole , yo ung Shrevepo rt pro who defied great odds and won his second straight 125 class ra ce at Mosier with 1-2 finishes , Crashes claimed Reeves and Doss, pulling them from the overall list, although Reeves was a strong second in round one, and Doss won the final , both on D/FW Elsinores. Presley 's rocket Honda carried him to second at 3-4 behind the similarly-powered Cajun, while Turnbo and his YZX Yamaha picked up third at 6-3 over Doug Cook (Yam, 7·5). With many AMA pros absen t, it was Randall T arter's day to cash in. Randy won both the 250 an d Open Expert classes, keeping h is Buls in con trol all the way, downing 24 in the 250 and 20
