Heikki 's move still p ut him a good distance back fro m Thorlie f who was blasting around with o nly slightly less vigor than 40 m in u tes ea rlie r . With abo u t th ree lap s to go in the first moto, Hakan Anders on h ad a sligh t get-off o n t he last uphill whi ch is ac tually a left-ha nd swee per in a bo wl full of large, irregular mounds of hard-p acked dirt. He re mo un ted , tr ied ' th e hill again and didn ' t lose his fift h pl ace; so grea t was the lead o f t he first five over Pean . Hei kki had closed sligh tl y o n Thorlie f but th ere di dn 't seem to be an y ti m e or any wa y to ca tch the swi ft Swede, unless ma ybe yo u 're th e Flying Finn. Tw o laps fro m th e flag, Hei kki grabbed the lead and im me d iately shot aw ay fro m a demoralize d Han sen who had led ne arl y 40 minutes of th e first rnoto. Jim was riding so me what co nservat ively in deference to his knee, which was injured in th e Puyallup Trans AMA round and isn 't su ppo sed to be 100% for another month. His conserv at ive sty le was very positive an d controlled. It was also good eno ugh for a stro ng fourth in o nly his third motocro ss of 19 76 ; th e firs t of 45 minutes. The first five finishers re mai ne d t he same as t he y had fo r virtual ly th e entire mo to, except th at Hei kki got to the finish line first. Then came Pean; Kavin ov wh o lived up to his pre-seaso n billing as the fastest Russ ian , Hakan CarIgrist (a ss), Har ry Everts, an d Rolf on the se mi-p rivate Dieffenbach Kramer -Maico . Fleming Ray mond Boven had badly shattered his wr ist only two we eks before th e World Championship began las t yea r. He was among the riders co ming off the wou nded lis t and had bee n relegated to No. 2 status o n t he team, be hind Ha kan M o ntesa Ander sson. When he pu shed his conservative ly-tu ne d wo rk s Mo ntesa to th e fron t of a charging pa ck at th e seco nd ga te dr op, a lo t of p eo ple we re surp rised - including t ho se behind him . They h ad so me ho w chosen to ignore t he fact that Boven had nearl y won th e Sp anish Gra nd Prix in 19 74 and had 100 ked ver y s tro ng in pra ct ice ; timin g in th e top ten for start posit io n. (Han s Maisch was fir st . J im Pomero y se t seco nd-fas test time.) This tim e, Harry Ever ts had his twi n-car b Puch in second pl ace an d tw o Flemi ngs cleared off from fast eve rybo dy in the first t hree laps . Kavin ov had the fir st KT:\I o f a see ming horde of th e red-tanked machines in th ird; Jim Pomero y was a tight fo urth with Han sen and Andersson in fifth and six t h . Mikkola h ad go tte n away ab ou t ten th bu t sta rte d mo vin g immedi at ely. Heik ki wa s goi ng o ver, t hrough an d aro und other rid ers as h e charged for the fro nt . He got up to Ha kan after about ten mi nu tes an d those two started bo uncing o ff ea ch other in t he tu rns, knees and elbo ws. Heikki st uck a wheel under Hakan ab o u t t hree co rn ers in a ro w and Hakan shut off his line each ti m e. Thorlief shot · p ast Pomero y an d then there was a three-m an jam for man y, man y laps as Jim, Ha kan and Heik ki went nose to tai l, banging into each other or jus t mis sing each other with handlebars overlapped - while lapping at under three minutes on the long, many-cornered course. Fin ally, both Hei kki and Daniel Pean got past Hakan , The slender Swede went motoring past slowly. like something was wrong. After the moto, an engi ne teardown revealed a broken piston. " It was not running so good the first moto, e ither ," Hakan admitted. "It felt slower than before . " Heikki went to work eliminating th e distance up to Pomeroy , Hansen and Kavinov. Af ter 15 minutes, Mikkola go t past Pomeroy. Back in the pack, old foe s Joel Ro bert, now on a fac to ry Pu ch he help ed des ign and Sylvain Ge boers (Mai ) were fight ing o ver eig hth place . Soviet mystery man. Vlad imir Kavinov went 7-6 . Kavinov slid o ut right in front o f Pomeroy . Heikki went after Thorlief. St ill o u t in front, Boven was riding beautifull y, doing a fine job of holding off World Champion Harry Everts. J oel was on the gas in th e second moto an d zip p ed past Geboers and Moisseev o n successive lap s. Mikkola we nt past Han sen and su ck ed th e big Swede alo ng behind him past Everts. T here was some disagreeme n t as to wh e ther Harry 's dual-carb rotary valve, p ist on p ort Puch was in tune. It so unded like it was brea king up a t high RPM. Mikkola started moving o n Boven who reall y hadn't shown sign s o f t irin g. With ten n minutes to go in t h e fi al mo to , Heikki Mik kol a ag ain took t he lead . Moisseev we nt o u t of th e moto after cra shin g and tearing o ff his rear fender. He joined Rol f Dieffenb ach who got a flat tire. Surprising ly , Po me roy picked up th e pa ce a nd st arte d clo sing on Everts. He almos t passed the Belgian over t he knife-ed ge top o f the uphill that had t hro wn An de rsson. He did p ass Harry on th e tigh t hairpins in th e back sec t ion of t he co urse and leap ed up th e gnar ly climbs on hi s stro ng, reli able one-carb Bulraco , Uim also had a twin car b model that he tri ed in practice bu t went b ack to the single 38 mm Bing-carbureted engine .) Thorlie f rea che d for his last reserv es o f ene rgy; fo und th e aggressiven ess to go with i t and went after Heikki. With only two lap s rema ining, Pomeroy took o ut after Han sen and Bo ven . T he re was n o more t ime for anybo dy. With all the first four closing t he spaces be twe en them , Hei k ki Mikkola again came to the flag firs t. Behind him, in close order, wcre ThorIief Han sen , Ray mo nd Boven, and Jim Pomeroy. " I . guess yo ur bike is goi ng fast eno ugh , Hei k ki." " Yes, I t hink so ." (All cre dit to Pella Persson who can build so me inc re dib le m achinery. ) " An d I am not feeling tired. I cou ld go one ho ur at th at speed. I feel lik e I not even r ace today . Maybe tomorrow "II be tired. " .. But you don't have to race a Grand Prix tomorrow." "Yes, I did that today ." • Resu lts MOTO ON E: .
