A ten mi le jaunt up the road and the course finally tu rned off for the start of man y , ma ny miles of Baja riding at its best.. The fog was causing some vision problems as goggles were becoming blurry, as dew mixed with dust, creating mud. A number of riders were late to the first check as they had to slow down to see : A brisk 36 mph average had everyone moving right along. ' Soon the fog lifted and the riders were treated to some spectacular Baja scenery. Baja is truly one of the last unspoiled deserts on earth and the Los Ancianos led us through some of the best, mostly on old roads which were barely recognizable as trails at times. We saw the highway one more time atGas One before heading out on what was possibly the most difficult section of the enduro. The 63 mile leg was mostly deep sand and you know what that does to gas mileage. By now the temperatures had climbed into the high 80's. The combination of sand and heat destroyed man y an engine in that unforgettable section. Some ran o ut of gas. Those luc ky enough to make it to the gas had a chance to relax for awhile as ·it was also the lunch stop. Many ride rs went back to pull their buddies oo t. 1 T he .c lub provided roast beef sandwiches with ice co ld drinks of your choice, plus co ld oranges, candy bars, mixe d p eanu ts bags and what' have you. A cold towel was handed to each rid er as he entered the area to wash off with as club members lubed the chains. All too soon it was time to move on a u t and see what the club had in min d next.
