Six ply tires with IS -pounds of pressure were well appreciated. I don 't know how many times I was jolted by a collision with a rock I never saw. Finally I realized what was happening. I would . pick a clear line but then the dreaded Mexican jumping rock would hop .right in there and K'BAM ... Flying through the air with the greatest of ease : •• cactus fields were another problem for riders to con ten d with. ~ At the ' third gas the enduro was over for Saturday except we still had to ride 74 miles to San Felipe. The course had a last minute change when the authorities refused permission to use a section the club had marked in (sound familiar?) .b u t the club had an alternative route all ready. When we crested the sand hill with the gulf just a short Way ahead we knew we had made it. One more day to go. Sunday After some bike maintenance and a good shrimp dinner it was a night of restless Z's. Come morning the weather cooled off considerably and so did the course. Sunday's course was as easy as Saturday's was hard. It was mostly mountain terrain over dirt roads and trails. The averages were still high, mostly 30 and ' 3 6 mph. Riders who could not maintain the aver age fell back an~ just enjoyed' the ride. We were seeing a Baja most didn't even know existed. Lunch was at a Mexican saw mill somewhere in the mountains. I . remember me adows with flowers blooming and wished I had brought color film. Finally the course crossed the highway with just about 40 miles to : go. Rain was threatening and the last obstacle was "Heartbreak Hill" in a 15 mph section. A check was wai tin g at the end of the section and it was off .5 of a mile. Riders who were timekeeping hit it two minutes early. The timekeepers cried and the rest just shrugged. About 20 miles from the finish the Annual Tradition . started: It rained. It was better than last year when it snowed but it still made things miserable especially when the course let out onto the highway for the final 10 miles in . Rain at 60 mph stings like hell. A good size finish cro wd was on hand to greet their heroes They had survived over 500 miles of Baja's worst terrain to pick up a cherished finisher pin and hopefully one of the Los Ancianos M/C really fine and unique trophies. Whoever wins the Tecate 500 will do so on the basis of being able to . ride at breakneck speeds through rugged and demanding terrain, It won 't be a timekeeper as the Tecate 500 wasn't a timekeeper's enduro •• • But it was one of the best rides I have ever had. • Results to come.
