CALI FO RNI A CITY, MAR. 27-28 Desert racer Cordis' Brooks dominated the Shamro ck's MjC Two Day Qualifie r on his South Bay Bultaco sponsored Pursang. Co rdis obviously had the special tests . d . Id WIre as n? one cou even co~e close to him. Bultaco rep Mike Hannon was second overall, first 250, 61 points down from Cordis. Last year's winner Carl Cranke won the 350 class for the only Penton class win but joined teammates Eric Jensen and Kevin La Voi in picking up the Manufacturer Team Trophy aceing out the Bultaco team of Mike Hannon , Ben Bower and Charlie Bethards. The team results might have been different h ad Cordis been signed up on the team ยท but he hadn 't submitted a letter o f intent according to Hannon. . The Club Team Trophy was won by Pacifi c Performance f rom up north which was composed of Fred Cameron (Pen) Ru ss Powell (KT M) and Larry T hompso n (KT M). Day One 10 Saturday dawned cold and windy , good fo r keep ing dust off the trail, lo usy fo r the pit crews wh o would be pitting in a central pit location near Galileo Hill which was lo cated about 15 miles from the Lakeshore Inn where the Start/Finish/Impound was located. For the riders it was a 43 mil e ride t o the firs~ ga~. At 7:31 t~e first riders rolled their bikes to the line and fired them up. The un,:,sual roar ~f two four strokes started thm!!" off "?th old desert salt Stan Baldwin on his Yamaha TT-50.0 and ISDT veteran Gene Can ady on hIS C&J fra med XL-350 Honda on number one . . Mos.t .ri ders had ~o prob.lem startmg within the one mmute: period, Todd Martella (Hus) had the misfortune to find his rear tire flat when he entered i~pound te~ minutes before hi~ starting time. That s enough to. dis courage anyone. Todd got th e flat fix ed but go t go ing quite late. Qu ite a few of th e .ISDT hopefuls were present with th e ex cepti on of the Penton family. A surprisingly num ber of four st ro kes were on hand inclu ding one of the most fam ous racers o f all time, Dick Man n on his DM fr am ed TT-500 Yamah a.
