Steve Hopkins (100 Kaw) was the first rider to try and he was the only one to better the time. He set a 8.54 second time which was .49 faster than his .posted time. Gary Chandler (5 00 Yam) was second followed by Dave Corbin (3 50 Kaw) and Sunny Holmes (200 BuI). • Zetfners zap San Antonio By Ginny Cutting SAN ANTONIO, TEX., MAR: 14 With weather conditions a little bit on the shady side (rain imminent) 'an d super use of a newly installed watering system race day at Cyclerama was a muddy ' question . marJ.. . . ' With combined racing for the 250 Juniors and Open classes,-Scott Zcttner (CA, 250) and Gregg Siestma (Suz-Open) provided exciting competition in both motos. Each maintaining their first and second positions in both motos, brought full attention to the conquest of third place. Two lIusky riders, David Stutts Uunior) and Bruce Finley Uunior} showed what motocross is all about. The first moto yielded mechanical problems on the next to last lap ' for Bruce Finley and brought him in with a ninth place finish. The second moto was without lady lu ck for David Stutts after doing a fast gearing change between motos, the bike wouldn't cooperate and left David with a DNS. . Undoubtedly, the most exciting racing of the day came with the 100s' and the Over 30s ' combined competition. In overall scoring, one could see an over 30 then a 100, an over 3D, then a 100, etc. And that's some racing ! Separately though, the 100s took the spotlight. Kyle Landrum (Suz) and Randy Mann (Yam) . were close at each others ' frames throughout the entire first moto. With one lap to go, the fight was on and as _both riders approached the checkered flag, the pressure and tension was evident. With agility and force , Landrum surged forward and gave himself a half bike lead and a first. With the beginning of the second moto , tension was again soaring and the first tum proved to be the judge - shooting off the starting gate and in to the first tum, Landrum and Mann were neck and neck - but, perhaps, too much of a "bottleneck" situation for Mann, who was tripped by another rider and found himself high side and biting the dust. Landrum bit the throttle and sailed into another well earned first. The lar gest class of the day, the 125 Novice and Juniors combined created a hectic two rounds of scoring. Can-Am's Brian Zettner (Novice) and Su zuki's Neill Cooper Uunior) played a constant game of cat and mouse. Novice riders Randy Goff (Hon), Jerry Rigb y (lion ), Bob Burkhart (Hus ), Bruce Phillips (Hon ) and Brian Mason (Yam) clearly provided s~spenseful action . • Results in Results Section.
