NORTHERN DATEUNE' Another double win was turned in by Frank Hannah in the 125cc and 250cc Junior events. Randy Grenig provided Hannah with fierce competition in both the 250cc heat and main. Track announcer Alan McGehee came down from his booth to participate in the 250cc Expert event. He put a neat pass on Richard Smith to take over the lead and the eventual win, then hustled back to the booth • Over-the-Hill at Spillway By Cheap Chuck SANTA MARIA, CAL., MARCH 7 ~~'ffff'ffft""ft"fff'ff'ffnfffffffffffffftfnnfffffffnffffffffftfftf" '''''''''ff'f'''''f''ffff''fff ~r.~~ -"@Suz~ki of Van Nuys@1 . The Spillway track was in great shape; however, it still gave some riders a bad time. Jaws Jon and Ridiculous Rex were just two of the gang who got off their bikes the hard way. Gang President, Dingus Dan , was really cooking the first moto, However, it wasn't u n til the end of the race that we found out his throttle had stuck wide open! Bad luck was had by Dung Dennis, Daisy Dave and Rocket Rodney as all three DNF'ed due to bike' problems. Philthy Phil is still bothered by a bad shoulder; when he gets better, he wil1 be back up fron t in the Amateur class : There was quite a battle in the Expert class between Maniac Mike, ' Horn y slimy as each muddy tire went over it. The start was on the upper level, dead engine, with the bikes facing the reverse direction. The three classes were started separately Experts, Heavyweight, then Lightweight. The HW Division was the largest class and they suspected a problem would arise when they began turning 45 bikes around to take off. ' _Pri or to the .start they all agreed to turn to the right to ease the situation. The only flaw in the plan was half of them don 't know their right foot from their . left. There was an in teresting mixture of riders whose specialties include desert, enduro and MX. The race had scarcely begun when the rumor began to filter through the crowd that a sure fire winner was out there, recently come from England. The roster did indeed include the name of Ken Maahs and Bob I Van Stee on a 125 Husky. Fate dealt them one of those blows all too familiar with Motorcycling, though. .With the ruler switching, etc., it was difficult to be certain who was leading any class at any given time. About mid poin t two Expert teams were certain they each had the lead and . the remainder of the race was a tight contest between them. On the final lap , team X was in front by 12 seconds but team Y was convinced their early lead had never been relinquished and the final count would prove they had an extra lap . Imagine the consternation wh en first place went to team Z who felt they had finished second behind team Y. After a lengthy discussion the top three teams agreed to :divide the purse equally. • ~v , Splitting the trees in the Fox Hollow woods. ~ o \\/1.; I MOTORCYCLE ME CHANICS I N S T I T U T E OF CAL I F O R NI A ~Jt·e Herb, Repulsive Ray and J au,ndice Jay. Spencer FREMONT, CAL., FEB. 29 It started out with just a tad of moisture but wound up the wettest marathon ever and the best ; part was that it did actually get run, despite three inches of water and adobe slime. Despite the amount of water and getting sloppy conditions, 30 entries spiced the 100/125 class for 10 trophies. Keith Myers teamed with Mark Narron to lead the early -po rtio ns just a few feet in front of Bob Linnell and team Morgan. Cllain adjustment and crashing left Myers/Narron as low as 15th at the halfway mark, but the poor conditions and good ridin g brought them back for atrophy. From lap 11 the Linnell Yamaha had it all with the Sanders second on the same lap a few yards up ' on the Bain /Cascio Yammie. Jim Sisco and Wayne Williams held second and third at the halfway point but couldn't handle all the mud and slide problems. ' The few brave souls who got the 250 going were treated to lots of comic antics as falling in the deep mud puddle's turned to gillgles and outright laughter.
