AI Eames' plan was t o run the fir st che ck really ti ght, and it was. Most of the top riders were co m ing in within their t wo minu te grace periods. For the remainder of the 147.2 miles, Al backed th epace do wn t o the previous day 's easy schedule wi thout te lling any of th e riders. "My purpose, " Al said -at th e en d of the day , "was to make the better riders think they had a challenging schedule to keep up with all along t he route. And yet, th e sch edule went back to being easy after th e first che ck so t hat the less experienced riders would be able to do well and perhap s finish w ith a medal. If the schedule is too hard, th e n ew ri ders won't want to come b ac k and ride another T wo- Day Trials again ." The second d ay began ta king its toll of machinery through attri t ion . Dwight Rudder went o ut with blown shocks on his Hercules. Dane Leimach hung in there wi th a broken swingarm on his Penton to win the co m bined IOOcc and 125cc class. Lars Larsson finished with a flat front tire on his new 250cc KTM motocrosser modified with lights: Frank Gallo, running close for the lead wi th Kevin LaVoie in the Open class, had a flat rear tire and lost 20 minutes in an unswift tire chan ge. Dennis Vandec ar lost his rear sho c ks. It began to lo ok like th e trials would co m e down to a two-way battle between Jack Penton and Dick Burleson. Halfway th rough the day, though, Jackie lo st h is rear brake, causing hi"! to overuse the front brake and bum it out as we ll. Arriving at the final chec k, J ack fo und his tail light wasn 't wo rking and had t o tear down his bike to che ck over the wiring system. Seconds before the flip card turned over to signal the end of his grace period he had the .tail light finally lit. Still with all his problems, Jack Penton had th e lowest score posted Sunday evening for the overall win. Burleson had already packed up and left for Husky in Nashville as the go ld , silver and bronze medals were handed out at th e evening's banquet dinner. J ack noted that an error had been m ade in his sco re , which once corrected would give the overall win to Burleson . Jack Penton still hel d onto his class win to give Team Penton a clean sweep of every class except the 350cc w her e Dick Burl eson, unknowingly, had picked up the overall win as well. . The top Club Team Trophy wen t to the Trask Mountain MC and th eir th ree man team of Buzz Ferelle , Ken Maahs and Gordon Young, Penton Eas t 's team of Max Markowitz, Kevin LaVoie and Carl Cranke _ picked up the Manufacturer 's T rop hy . Becau se o f o the r sco rin g err ors in the Sp ecial Test, th e Penton Imports T eam of Dan e Liembach , Tom and J ack Penton sh ould have gar nere d t he Manufacturer's T ro p hy by a few points over th e Penton East Team. Dick Mann was ex p ecte d to sh ow up with Team Yamaha riders Chris Carter, John Farro w an d Dave Ashe ly o n the new Yamah a 400cc enduro bikes , bUI never made it . Popu lar Cycling 's -Brat! Zimmerman did a fine job of filling in for Dick on th e team, despite a highspeed endo on Sunday which left Zimmerman feelin g a little sp aced out by day's end . Bultaco's Mike Hannon took a clo se se cond to Jack Pen Ion in the 250cc - class. Team Hercul es hoped to take home the Manufacturer's T ro p hy, but rider Mik e Rosso was penalized o n Saturday morning fo r being two fe et short of leaving th e st ar t ing ar ea when his starting minute turned over. Mary Witte, Malcolm Smith's girlfriend, used up the m ost film o f th e w eekend while taking pictures of • - yep , y ou gu essed who.
