Tooling down the freeway in a staggered line, sometimes a mil e long, the senior cit izens draw st ares from passing motorists: "Well, we don't pay any attention to them:" says Jack Shirkey , 76 who dr ives while his wife , Myrt le , 73, sits behind him . . ' The Power Riders - formed in 1970 in this retirement co mm un ity outsid e Phoenix - have members ranging from 50 to 76. Once a we ek the y rid e in a pack to a chosen site , usu ally within 50 miles, ha ve lunc h ' or a co ok-ou t, and ride home. One group of them has ridden to the White Mountain s a nd ba ck, a 260·m ile round trip . . Shirkey, a former oilfield worker and airline employee, has been riding motorcycles since bo yhood . . They cracked down on th e Hi-Vista area and issued approximately 100 citations for bravery. Somet im es I would go all season without missing a sin gle Friday night or a National. But t hat 's an ch anged now and here's why . If you're going to pro mote races you have to run it regularly , not Frida y ni ght o ne week and Saturday night th e next. Also, if yo u want to draw fans y ou 've go t to have names such as Romero . Alda na , Hocking. Gennai . Ascot is a ver y dangerous track.
