TEXAS CANYON, CAL., MAR. 13-14 Dropping only 18 points through two days and 80 sections, Marland Whaley (Hon) won the second round of the California Sta te Championship , Th e Valley Ob served Trials Enthusiasts' St. Patrick's Day 2-Day. Lersch and Schreiber at right . mist and hail" this year's event was run under \?erfect conditions, Usin g mostly last year's loops and sections, riders left each morning, one to the minute, for 90 minu tes, They had five and a half hours to complete two tours around the 20-mile loops, plus an hour grace. On the first crack at Saturday's loop, M"arland dropped only three points. Bernie Schreiber (Bul), the previous winner, turned in a six, followed by Lane Leavitt's (Bul ) ten. On the second tour, Marland didn't do quite as well, dropping eight, while Bernie lost ten. One interesting section was Ten, where the riders started up a golIy and the Experts were sent on a dog-leg up a pair of five-foot rock ledges, the second one being three feet after the first and covered with loose dirt: There were five cleans on the first lap and the rest were fives. On the second loop both Leavitt and Schreiber scored twos, while Whaley cleaned it for the second time, the only rider to do so. The loop offered plenty of variety, things such as rocky gullies, uphills, long, steep downhills and other miscellaneous goodies. Many .of th e Novices finished into their grac e and tired as well. Sunday morning dawned and the action shifted to ' a different course. The first six sections were close together in a rock-strewn golIy. Section Two was easier than last year, with the Experts' entrance into the golly not quite so steep. The Amateurs and Novices had a hard right turn at the exit while the Experts went iip and turned around on the hilI, came down and had a hard Ic!ft to make. Whaley had a five-point first loop, three of which he lost in Section 20 . Nineteen and 20 ran back to back, a long, rocky ravine with a steep entrance in 19. The Experts had little trouble with 19, but in 20 they were sent up and down the sides of the ravine, until the exit, where they had to turn left up a three-foot vertical ledge. Bernie took a one , Marland a three, and Lane a five on the first attempt. Man y riders were making a deliberate dab at the turn up the ledge. Finally Jeff Fish was able to pull the fron t end up and around far enough to blast up the slope and clean the section. He was the only rider to clean it all day. ~ The second time around. Whaley turned in a terrific performance, dropping only two points in sealing the win. Schreiber, who could have retired the perpetual winner's trophy, ended the weekend with 31 points lost, good for second. Leavitt, who won the firs t round of the State Championship , finished third, with 52 points gone. ~ Gary LaPlante (But) took fourth. Greg Carter (Mon) had his way in the Amateur class, losing 26 points, while runner-up Jim Mulcahy (Bul) dropped 40, In the Novi ce class, Dean York came in on his grace, but still won with a 69 .3. Fred Gross finished second, and in at fourth (decided by the number of cleans) Mike Bast won the battle of the speedway racers over J im Fishback (Yam). Marvin Russell (Bul) won the Senior class, and while it took Red Collins a pair of bikes to do it, lie finished and got a trophy for oldest finisher, •• Results 8 TR OPHV WINNERS EXPERT : 1.
