lap duel with Pat Hennen and
Steve Baker, registered his
second consecutive. Lightweight road
race win at Daytona on Saturday
morning. The two-time Grand National
Champion "played" with Hennen and
Baker during the first half of the 26
lap/IOO mile event, waving the eventual
second and third place finishers "on up
to do some racing." The waving and the
desire to top the acknowledged pavement master producted 18 lead changes
and a blistering speed for the nearly
all- Yamaha 250cc field which by the
20th lap reached 99.302 mph.
Qualifying events, run on Friday,
produced one runaway win, that by
Yamaha Canada sponsored Steve Baker,
and a tightly co ntested one which saw
Ron Pierce and his Boston Cycle
sponsored Kawasaki win after a five lap
bas h th at produced 12 lead changes,
Pierce's heat was the faster of the two
. and he was joined on the front line by

Pat Hennen led the mob through the
infield and across the finish line on the
initial lap with Roberts, Pierce and Baker
in hot pursuit. For the next ten laps it
was a three man show for the lead as
Pierce dropped back to fourth.
