Phil Stumbo (250 CZ) . was in n ext , for sixth and second 250 Expert. He'd spent a lot of time dicing with Tom Kelly and Brent Johnson, moving himself up from ninth through the pits. Another 250 Expert, Rusty Sanderson (Bul), was in next working his way up from a mediocre posi tion at the 15-mile mark. Tom Kelly (125 Yam) was in at eighth, finishing first small-bore despite a bout with the flu the previous week. Gordon Schmid (400 Yam) was next in ; he took first Senior Expert. Allen Meek (4 00 KTM) rounded out the top ten and took first Amateur in spite of an inoperative clutch and blown head and base gaskets. ~ The Novices had a separate start from the Amateur/Experts this time. Doug Hurt (400 Yam) led it to the bomb, but Shawn Underwood (400 Yam) won easily. Mike Cole (Yam) took the 250 class, while home-town boy Bernard Unhassobiscay (Han) triumphed over the small-bores, Powder Puff Chris Wallace (250 Suz) waged a race-long duel with her dad Pete , whom she beat by two positions on her way to first Novice Powder Puff. Gordon Smi th won the overall Beginner victory, doing it on a 400 Husky. Steve A , Riehe (250 Mai) and Richard Ro u nd (125 Yam) achieved class victories within the Beginners. The first 20 m iles of the co urse were wide open, with tig ht canyons and hills the rest of the way to the Red Mountain pit. Then some tight areas around Government Peak and Camp C as the racers headed for the fmish in downtown Cal City .
