All riders co m pet ing in the Wednesday afternoon races had q ualified for the Ch ampionships at qualifying races run prior to Speed Week. Connecticut's Richard Schlacter took the first checkered flag in the 380cc Production final , Leading a Yamaha benefit, he came up from fourth and passed early leaders Mike Baldwin and Alton Sharp. Charles McDonald pl ay ed " cat and mouse " with fellow Kawasaki speedster Ed Bargy before rocketing ahead in the 550cc Production class to the delight of his fans in Rochester, N .Y. Canadian racer Lang Kindle spoiled the American Bicentennial year for Mike Baldwin and 30 other big-bore aces in Open Production. Kindle p ut his Kawasaki up front early with Baldwin's Du cati adding a bass note to the otherwise high p itched two-stroke melody. Schlacter returned for another win in the 380cc Cafe class, which boasted the largest field o f the day . It was no easy win, ho wever, as Maryland 's Forrest Kerns kept th e pressure on. On ce again, a Yamaha benefit. Texans Dave Robinson and Randy Reynolds put a pair of Hondas up in the 1-2 positions in th e 550cc Cafe division with Ted Jennings placing his Kawasaki in third in the 12 lap even t.
