The top ti me of the day was sewed up by Gary Chandler on a 750 Triumph on his first run in the 1500 class. He shot over in 4 .93 seconds and the closest anyone came to h im was Henry Polley on a 650 Triumph with 4.97 seconds which tied Gary 's time in the Exhibition class . These were the only sub five second times of the day. Gary also had a secon d on the 500 class on a new 500 Ya maha. David Carder (Bul) and Henry Po lley (Suz) h ad the rare pl easu re o f going home knowing t hat they had beaten Will Alford in the 25 0 class. T hat is something that is hard to do and Henry's second was just as nice as David's first in this instance. Another Polley who had people setting up and taking notice was 12-year-old Mike. He locked the throttle on his YZ 80 Yamaha wide open in the Mini class an d flew over in 8.65 seconds in the first found for first. He also rode a 125 Suzuki in the 125 Enduro Street class and after running out of gas on his first run, he turned it on and set a 10.15 second time for first in that class also. Sunny Homes also rode a new bike into the gold. He took his 125 Honda Elsinore over in 6.79 seconds for a first and then just to show that it was not an accident he took his 200 Bultaco over in 6.2 seconds for another first. Sunny had to sweat a little about the 200 class thoug h because Norris Meeks and Tommy Elkins were only o ne and two tenths of a second slower and that is just a blink of an eye. After one of To m Hairston's rides on his 1000 Triurnp someone told him that they thought he and Mike Jones were afraid of their big bikes and Tom gave as very astute answer. He said, "After me running in to a wall and Mike crashing yo u can bet I' m scared of it." Watching the m en who ride the big iron get themselves ready to go on the line is a show in itsel f. It is generally agreed that they can do most anything they want to, to get ps yched up for their rides. Some of them look as if they are saying a prayer before they leave the line and others just take a lot of deep long breaths, but none of them just come to the line and blast off. A new me mber of the big bike club was accepted after the climb. Randy Lay took Jim Wilso n's 800 Triumph for a spin and decide d that that was the life. After a little gentle persuasion Randy ta lked Sunny Holmes into trading his 800 Triumph which he doesn't ride much, for a 500 Yamaha. After the trade Randy was walking on air , and Sunny was trying the hill with the Yamaha. A fitting end to a nice day. ' • iI WORLD MI IGRAND PRIX ii tJfA i THE WORlIJ CHAMPIONSHIP. In sp ite of the tough sections two Novice riders we re at their tops, riding with no mista kes. Both riders completed the 30 sections in perfect form by not scoring one penalty point. Rick Keen on his Honda TL-1 25 and Less Start on his Yamaha TY-250 rode their motors across rocks through water up hills and around tight turns in a way all Trials riders dream. In o rder to break the tie a "ride-off" was held . They had to ride an extra sectio n th ree ti mes (a sec tio n that t he Experts had been riding). Rick rode it first and "cleaned " it . Then Less took one p enalty p oin t when he dabbed as he made a turn out of the mud to go up a hill. Less did the same on his next two rides - as Rick "cleaned" the section all three rides. Thus Rick Keen was the top rider fo r t he day riding 33 sections and cleaning everything . • r- • FROM YOUR HI -POINT DEALER M.a l~O lm 8 1ls. e ln Jofama Smith . ~ .< " ~ra(kma~ttr auality Track Racing Equipment Largest ~ -....
